There has been a lot of conversation on the idea of incorporating an expanded battle field that pops up during a conflict.But I think the RTS top-down style would indeed bog the game down, and you should only use that style with multiple units.
How about a quakeII style quick battle between the two units. Since there are only two and not a squadron on each side, this seems to make sense.
You have a quick and dirty first person shootout for about 30 seconds in a small wooded or (appropriate) terrain, and then back to the game.
I'm not a first-person shooter fanatic but this seems to make more sense, and it would be fairly easy to incorporate this into the game.
