There has been a lot of conversation on the idea of incorporating an expanded battle field that pops up during a conflict.

But I think the RTS top-down style would indeed bog the game down, and you should only use that style with multiple units.

How about a quakeII style quick battle between the two units. Since there are only two and not a squadron on each side, this seems to make sense.

You have a quick and dirty first person shootout for about 30 seconds in a small wooded or (appropriate) terrain, and then back to the game.

I'm not a first-person shooter fanatic but this seems to make more sense, and it would be fairly easy to incorporate this into the game.

hehe, sounds like fun...
actually that would be a lot of fun i multiplayer. if you are a good quake2 player, just build a lot of 1-1-1's and kill everyone with your skills

hey firaxis, could this be impliemted with a mod? or how about the mom type combat?. how customizable is the code?

I'm sure this won't happen in this game, but I would love to see a future game that incorporates the SMAC strategic game plus an option to use the Gettysburg game engine to resolve combat. Of course, it would probably take about a year to finish a game....

But what if you could play the entire US Civil War or Napoleon or WW3 using SMAC but zoom in for combat.
