is there any benefit, other than more rapid movement, to building roads? i mean along the lines of civ, where you received bonus trade arrows... do roads enhance any aspect of resources, minerals, or energy in the later stages of the game? the3.14rt

Well they do give you bonus for minerals. And they halp you move faster through the fungus, forest, rocky squares.. And later in the game they let you build Mag Tubes, which give you penalty free movement at no cost.

Apart from the mineral bonus on rocky squares with mines, no. Roads are very dangerous. If you build a huge road network (or worse, tubes) you are completely defenseless against enemy probes.

thanks to ira and wen. i do have some questions though. first goes to ira. is my prob lack of scientific advancement? i have not been able to build roads on fungus. maybe that ability comes later. my second goes to wen. do probes take a detour when they meet units from another faction? i know my military units can share a space with an opponent's military unit. can a probe share a space with another faction's unit? katie bar the door!!! the3.14rt

Roads are a good thing I think, you just need to be careful. Put troops outside your bases!, this isn't Civ II, you don't get unrest for being outside your base, you get it for being outside your borders. Don't go too road crazy, just build a road from each city to the nearest city, it improves your movement. Then stick 1 unit in the road somewhere and now enemies have to stop somewhere before your city, kill the unit when it stops.
