Hi there folks, I have only had the retail version of SMAC for a few days now and have barely scratched the surface of this fine TBS game. I have not however found a particular building (facility) that I think would be a great addition to the game.

Note that if such a facility exists, please let me know. I do not think it does. I'd like to see a Unit Training Center that once created would provide in-house training for units. The facility would cost a fixed amount to remain active, then improvements can be added to increase the technology level of the training.

Two versions of the facility Veteran and Elite would exist. The first to become available would be the Veteran facility.

Veteran Training Center - Would train units from "Green" up through "Veteran" at a fixed rate of turns per level of advancement. This would require that the unit remain in training throughout each level of advancement (e.g. they cannot be removed from the city). The number of turns required per level would increase with each skill level.

Elite Training Center - This facility would become available as an improvement for, or replacement of the Veteran Facility. It could be linked to one of the technologies being researched before it can become available, just like the first center. The difference here is that a unit may receive training all the way up through Elite level.

The reason I bring this up is because it would be nice early on in the game to be able to train units without unecessary risk. It's also a good way to improve units you have sitting around for defensive purposes only - give them something to do while also improving their fighting ability.

I understand that such a change is highly unlikely for SMAC, but perhaps in a future release of a similar product.

I think being able to train units up to elite, even if it took a long time would be too powerful. Instead how about allowing training only to Disciplined or perhaps hardened (after a point you actually have to experience combat to get better at it). That way you could at least get rid of that pesky -12% most units start with.
On second thoughts perhaps that's what the social choices and factions that give morale are for.

The building that you are looking for are the Command Center for ground troops, the Naval Yard for sea troops, and the Air Complex for air units. Then there is the Bioenhancement Center? (I don't build it because I get the wonder that gives it to you.) that upgrades all types of units. With these in place, all of your units get a 4 level morale upgrade and with just a bit of Morale or the Increased Morale option, they can very easily be elite the turn they come into play.
