Author Topic:   The patch 2.0 doesn't work

I got the patch, put it in my game dir, tried to run it. It looked for a file "terran" and then it said "Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No updates done since file contents do not match". Anybody else got this problem? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Make sure you're using the full version, not the demo. Also, if you installed the game into a different directory that the default, you'll need to browse into that directory.

Make sure it's the US version, not pirated (duh), and otherwise unmodified. Copy it over from the \programs folder on the CD to be sure.

I haven't heard for certain whether or not SMAC is available in Europe. Some people seem to think so. The executable is slightly different, but as far as content goes is identical. The patch for those versions will be completed as soon as we can.

Thanks Jeffrey for your usual quick as lightning reply. It is out on the 18th inIreland too, I just wanted to get an idea of how long after the patch would be out, still I am curious why the European .exe needs to be different, why is that?

I would realy like to hear more about HOW having diffrent versions for different continents can help against pirating...
All I have experienced is frustration when the patch for european versions NEWER comes..
One build and ONE patch version... Wouldn't that give a lot less work for all of us?
I realy hope I newer see a deep inpact on AC again

It was EA's idea, though to be fair I believe many European retailers won't carry non-copy protected titles (that's what they tell us anyway).

The patch will not properly apply if you have made changes to one of several of the .TXT files (e.g., ALPHA.TXT or any of the faction .TXT files).
There are two solutions: 1) uninstall, reinstall, then apply the update to the clean install, or 2) refresh the .TXT files in question directly from the CD.
If using the second approach, Windows will copy the files with their CD-ROM attribute settings (i.e. WRITE PROTECTED). You can run ATTRIB from the DOS prompt to reset those file attributes, then reapply your modifications. (attrib -r *.txt)

I hope the games content isn't changed in anyway in the euro version, like for example in Fallout 2. And it is really a shame to wait for local patch... I wonder if they are sell�ng the US version version somewhere here in Finland. In case that we had to wait for weeks or even months for those patches.

I've got the same problem. I bought the game feb. 16 in Amsterdam. I think it is the UK version, but I'm not sure. I'm dying for the patch to appear. Please?

I upgraded with the 2.0 patch without any problems, EXCEPT, now I'm not getting any sound after the game introduction. I have checked the preferences and everything is ok. I have gone to the extent of removing the entire game, reinstalling and reapplying the patch. The result is the same: I get the inital movie sound, but afterwards, no sound. Just courious if anyone else has had this problem. I have clicked on the reinstall feature of DirectX off the game CD and no change either

Sounds like the game is misdetecting your soundcard as EAX compatible. Make sure that both EAX and DS3D are set to 0 in the alpha centauri.ini file.

I just got the UK version today (in Ireland), & just for fun I tried the US patch!! It got a far a the Terran.exe & said it was different, so I ran the game & it worked but the sound was all jumpy (I have a Soundbalster Live!) so I uninstalled SMAC & installed again fresh, but it refuses to work unless I run the US patch with the jumpy sound, which is really weird, so when is the UK patch coming out, in a week or less? Cuase European customers can't play multi with US ppl untill then,right?

Being in the US, I have the US version, of course. Would it be possible for me to get the files for another language? I am studying German right now, and being able to play a German language version of SMAC might be useful.
