I'm under the impression that when you hit the space key the unit initiates field repairs as well as skips a turn. But H key ? What is the difference is holding position anything like skipping turn. Can a unit conduct field repairs if it is holding a position if not what's the benifit of holding a position ?

hold simply means that it stays in that spot till you say otherwise. They do initiate repairs. |

Another option is the L key. Here the unit also initiates repair and stays til you say otherwise, but the unit will "wake up" if an enemy unit comes by. If there is a transport in a city, and you give unit in that city the L command it will be abord the transport when the transport leaves the city. |

or, to put it into CivII terminology...H= Fortify L= Sentry However, IIRC, in SMAC, if you 'sentry' a wounded unit, it will automatically wake up once it's fully repaired, in addition to when it's within range of an enemy. (a nice feature, btw, thanks Firaxis!)
