To all of us who don't have it (poor me, damn college!). What was your first impressions of Firaxis' brilliant idea of having a free web server for SMAC games.

I went it, but I have no idea how your supposed to start games (i don't have SMAC yet), what the hell are the "pads" supposed to do?

As a Veteran of Blizard's Starcraft Battlenet online matching service, I'll be very interested to see how it plays. As long as they don't inject some kind of online ranking between players, we'll be fine.

So, hear that Alpha HQ? Don't make a ranking system. It has been the kiss of death for online Starcraft players. Hackers came out of the woodwork to tear into the code: map revealing hacks, resource bonuses, etc...

Let's just keep it simple.

They could learn a lot from the zones interface. I know some battle.net fans hate it, but its much better for small numbers of gamers than battle.net. And I don't see SMAC as a wide appeal multiplayer game. Of course if it does get big that style of setup won't work, so then I guess go look at battle.net and fix everything thats wrong with it.

I stopped by the ALPHAHQ. It looks OK (much better than Interplay's MAX2 setup).

However, since it is purely a matching system it's main focus is providing a single point of convergence for those looking for a game.

You can accomplish the same thing on KALI or ICQ ... I have use both successfully already. KALI lets you PING the others before you dash off to start the game. With ICQ, you can use the DOS PING command before joining the host.

Best Regards.

I guess that it will probably be just like Jedi Knight(great game). That you write the ip adress to the computer you want to connect to.
