My CD drive will not recognize the disc. Is this my system, or have I encountered yet another rushed, bug riddled piece of......?
I'll return my copy and get a different one on the chance of a defective disc. I sure hope Sid's name wasn't given to something buggy.

YES! This is buggy!!! I am pretty unhappy.
After waiting so long and then my roommate
and I try to play with our networked computers only to have it freeze up after a few or more turns. We have tried it four times so far and have even uninstalled and reinstalled again. Also, I thought that every one takes thier turn at the same time???? That is not what I see. I go then my friend has his turn. It updates at the same time but we are still taking turns!
I think that the patch or free addon or whatever it is going to be called needs to be posted pronto to fix the multiplayer freeze. ( I was using IPX and I know that my network is configured correctly)

:-(

Wel, SMAC can be played either simultaneously, OR each takes their turn. So, that's that one solved...

Oh yes, and there is a Support and Troubleshooting forum for problems like a CD not working. I'd suggest posting there if you haven't already.

Have you tried it on another CD drive though? That would at least point towards a physical problem with the CD if it didn't work on two PCs.

Just for the record.
I had some crashes while starting up the game. Screen turns black and it freezes my sytem completely.
Eventhough i've played quite some time wiht the game, those nasty crashes still linger ...

I think a lot of bugs in all games must be due to bad systems. Don't buy your computer from best buy! Okay this may not be your problem, not saying it is, but I haven't had a problem with any piece of software I've bought in the last 5 years now. Every time I hear others say that game x is buggy, my version is just fine.

Have you played multiplayer games over a network? Also, TCP/IP play kept trying to dial out to the net even though I: 1st try put in my computer name, 2nd try put in my computer's IP address (LAN).

Also how is the game played simultaneously? I would think that this would be on by default.

These really belong on the troubleshooting forum, but here goes:

Simultaneous is a multiplayer option, the first actually, when setting up your game.

Don't know about the CD's, I'll check over in the other forum for more detail.

Is that crash when you start the game? Do you see the firaxis logo, then nothing? If so, it's the movie player. Refer to the readme.txt for suggestions on solving movie problems (there is a few things to try). To confirm if that's the problem, I'd use the external movie player, which is in the movies folder on the CD. Just drag a movie onto the icon in a window to test it.

I'm not sure what you're talking about with TCP/IP trying to dial out. If your two machines are on a lan, note their IP addresses (run winipcfg.exe) and enter those for ip prompts. The only time it should "dial" anything is with a direct modem game.

2 of us played an IPX network game for over 24 hours we did have about 5 game lockups which all seemed to occur with automated units. After each crash we just loaded the autosave and off we went. The game is great and causing massive loss of sleep. Good work Firaxis

I had the same problem. The screen turned black and froze up after the Firaxis splash screen came up. After downloading the latest
video driver(DirectX 6.0 compatible)the movie played just fine.

SMAC KAMI: "Have you played multiplayer games over a network? Also, TCP/IP play kept trying to dial out to the net even though I: 1st try put in my computer name, 2nd try put in my computer's IP address (LAN)."

This is a function of good ol' Windows with a healthy mix of IE. ANYTHING in Windows will try to use your IE settings for a network connection so if you have IE set to automatically dial out for an internet connection then that's what it'll do when you try to conneect to _anything_ via TCP/IP. Go into the proerpties for the internet and switch your connection type to "via a LAN" (or something similar) to avoid this one.

Thank you for your input I will try it when I go home tonight. Both computers are Win 98 so I guess that IE is taking control. My network should be (IPX that is) configured correctly. I say this because I have been using it for a while without problems.

SK

PS In my first post I was a little angry because I was having problems right out of the box. I am sure that single player works well. I will try agian tonight. Of course I am not trying to make the great people at Firaxis feel bad. I am happy that the game is out so I just want to play with my friends.

Don't be so sure about the single player game working that well. I've had two games crash several turns into the game. I've been able to recover using autosaved games, but this is still annoying. Hopefully the patch will fix things.

Don't just leave it at that. What was going on when the game crashed? Have you been able to duplicate the problem? Often unrepeatable fatals can be caused by lack of swap file space so ensure you've got plenty of free HD space on your C: drive (or whatever drive you've assigned the swap file to). If you do find a repeatable crash, by all means send it to me at [email protected]. Detail as much as possible what you need to do to get it to occur. Thanks.
