The Good: I just picked up my copy of SMAC.

The Bad: I'm still at work so I haven't played it yet.

The Ugly: Today is my anniversary.

The Dilemma: How do I enjoy the game but keep the marriage?

I guess I should hold off playing today. Could you imagine?

Wife: Honey it's time to go out for dinner.

Me: Hang on honey I just started to play. I'll be there in 5 min.

Wife: OK

(5 min. later)

Wife: Come on!

Me: OK. Let me just wrap up this one turn.

(4:00 am)

Me: Damn those Spartans! I'll get them next game. OK, honey let's go.

Me: Where's my wife and why is all the stuff in the apartment missing?

OldGuy ... you ain't got the half of it ... my sister AND her best friend both had babies on the weekend, SMAC arrived on Tuesday ... how am I supposed to juggle visits, cleaning up their houses (which they did for us when Joshua was born) and SMAC? I mean ... 1 I could have coped with, but two at once??? Top that off with the fact that Sunday is Valentine's day ... another day destroyed for SMACing, I mean, another day to spend with my lovely wife

Old_Guy - Why not buy your wife another computer and another copy of SMAC for your anniversary? Maybe you can spend the rest of your day at work devising the rules for "strip" SMAC (say your opponent has to lose one article of clothing for each secret project you build and each of their cities you destroy).

Add a little spice to your marriage and still get to play.

P.S. - My anniversary is in mid December. You would think that that would cause a lot of problems with ship dates as well, but we all know that no games ever make it into the stores before the Christmas rush.

You think that's bad? My WIFE had a baby last week--five weeks early! However, he won't be coming home from the hospital for a few days yet (he's doing fine, not to worry!), so I will have a *little* bit of SMAC time for the next few evenings, after I return from my nightly hospital visits with my cutie-pie son. :-)

Old Guy---

1) Consider getting a new wife if you decide to play SMAC instead of playing with the old wife.

2) Decide not to go out and have a romantic evening at home--Ordering from Pizza Hut probably won't cut it.

3) Depending on how long you have been married--Threaten your wife with a night of mad, passionate lovemaking, including a request for **** and ****, and she'll probably go out on her own and you will have plenty of time to play!

Oxybeles an older, married with children kind of guy...

Lee:

It won't get any easier for a while. Once the little guy is home, you'll have two masters demanding your sleep time (three, if you count yourself). Infants have a weird way of crying at the most inopportune times, and stealing precious sleep time that you could otherwise devote to the game.

Congrats, though. You'll have a great time with both.

Hehe. My son is now 2 and a half so it wasn't too long ago that I would combine game-playing and child care by holding by son and bouncing him with the left arm while clicking away with the right. Yet another act that makes you real popular with the spouse.

Of course now that my boy is two I can tell my wife that having him in my lap and playing games is male-bonding. I do in fact want to get him interested but his attention span isn't long enough yet. Perhaps SMAC will be the game that puts him over the edge.

Oldguy: My son's 5 months and I love that excuse for staying up (bouncing baby late to give my wife some sleep). Everyone at work assumes I'm tired because I had to look after the baby, my wife thinks I'm wonderful because I give her extra sleep, and Joshua thinks I'm great because he gets to sit on a lap (his favourite place is on someone), in front of a machine with buttons to push, lights flashing and lots of music. We all win and I get to play SMAC.

Note: the space bar is a dangerous tool in the hands of a 5-month-old "What do you mean all my units have already moved????"

Mooman is right, let's get our priorities straight here. Shame on you Old_Guy for even thinking about it. You got to look to the future! You have a chance to spend a lifetime together!!!!!

How could you even consider squandering 2-3 precious hours on an Anniversary Dinner. Tell your wife that you will celebrate twice next year.
The Future is NOW .......SMAC the future! ;-)
