Yep guys and gals, SMAC is dead. It was dead when it was released. It is only a well dressed Civ 2 engine. The game is to easy to manipulate to your favor. I can turn the believers into builders and the peacekeepers into excellent fighters, it makes no sense.
This game was poorly playtested. Whoever playtested this game was on crack, plain and simple. It is basically bull**** with a bottle of perfume poured on it to make it somewhat desireable. Brian and Sid were to busy seeing which one of them has a stick shoved further up their ass than the other to actually write a whole new game engine which is balanced. They just desire to sit on their laurels and get praised for "creating" such a great game. They didn't create a damn thing, I feel like I'm playing Civ 2 with a really good modpack. I shouldn't feel that way when playing an entirely different game.
A ****ing circus monkey on speed could have made a more balanced game than Brian and Sid did. So SMAC is dead, it is now removed from my hardrive. The only people who deserve commendation are the artist, for they are the ones that manipulated our minds to make us think that this was a whole new game. I actually find posting on these boards more fun than playing the game. I guess I will have to go back to Orge Battle (an old SNES game), that game was the greatest. I may redownload starcraft, that was a good game (with a great game engine as well). Firaxis, take a little lesson from Blizzard; when you actually release a new game, make sure it is actually new. Firaxis looks like ****ing microprose right now (microprose releases **** based on the Civ 2 engine, never designing new engines and AI, that would be work for them, and they can't have that).

Trippin, me ol' son

May I take advantage of one of my more (almost) lucid moments to politely take issue with you?

You are obviously better at the game than I am - but then I perhaps take more drugs than you thus rendering me less effective. I've now cleaned up and approached micromangement with better results. However, I, and I suspect many posters on this forum, still find a significant degree of challenge on the higher levels. However, I'll take your point here as if you are so good that you can kick the AI's butt everytime then why should I disagree. Maybe, though, it's you that's good not the AI that's (entirely) cretinous . ALternatively, I and many of your fellow forumers must hang our heads in shame.

You make some good points, some of which IMHO have merit. However, I think you've missed the point a bit. Yes, I think SMAC is a well dressed Civ2 engine. In the sense that it builds upon the triumphs of the past. For it to be criticised otherwise is to say that the cars parked outside the houses of our fellow forumers (excluding students and those of us who blow our money on other things) are nothing other than enhancements of the Model T which indeed used the boring old round-wheel in each corner technology of Sid Meier's Horse and cart - nothing new under the sun, eh. Presumably, you would dismiss all of the aerodynamic and engineering enhancements etc. of modern cars as nothing other than "well designed modpacks". SMAC, imperfect and buggy as it is, shows a clear step forward.

If, however, you mean that the game does not offer sufficient enhancements over Civ2 to justify the price then you are saying it is poor value for money not that it is a bad game.

Is that the point you are intending to make?

Oh, and by the way, I admire a man who doesn't make hasty decisions. You must have been playing it for months before you got this excited and deleted it. Well done.

No, no umbra, I won't be back on SMAC. I have gone for three weeks now without a single longing for the game, simply because the game is boring and predictable. And yes Resource Consumer, I'm saying that it isn't worth its cost. If I paid 20, then I would say it would be worth its cost. Unfortunately thouhg, I didn't pay 20 for it.

Hey why not play PBEM? Far more fun than playing against the predictable AI... and you actually have to develop some good strategies, rather than relying on the AI to do all your research for you and then commit suicide in pointless inter-faction wars... anyway, whether or not you come back to SMAC, glad to see that some things never change... how's the view from up there??

SMAC is far from dead, though it is easy to manipulated the engine you can always make a different game altogether by editing the txt. file. Oh and a note about Blizzard, though Starcraft is the greatest RTS game there is, it isnt a new engine at all, its the exact same engine used in Warcraft 2.

Trip- LMAO

You may be sincere on not playing, but the rest of your BS sure is tasty.

I have had an unearned 10 day hiatus from SMAC due to Computer problems and baby deliveries and I have thougt of the game at some point practically everyday, usually while sitting on the pot and that is not because I think it is **** .

SMAC is as creative as any sequel I have ever played or seen.

Through an unforgivable trash accident I lost my first SMAC CD and thus have bought the game twice, and I still feel I got my money's worth.

Tripping!

Dude, just cause you got a new girl doesn't mean you need to slap the SMAC bitch so hard to make her leave you alone.

Seriously, I understand your concerns. I do think SMAC is a good game. But it could have been so much more. If only the developers and play testers hadn't gotten to where they stomped the computer within 150 turns (to 200 turns when they were goofing off or experimenting). Then the game play might be better balanced past that point.

You, as a human, should always be able to outsmart a simple linear processing machine. When you can't then you worry... or enjoy. Depending on the kind of person you are.

You may wander back to SMAC. The TBS Game World is too small and not enough out there. But wherever you go in the digital experience, have fun!

And finally... Yes, the forums ARE often more fun than the game. Sad but seemingly true for many. But the forums have a way of reminding you why you enjoyed playing SMAC and starting it again, so it can't be all a waste of time.

I paid maybe $50 USD for SMAC -- and I have played it for must be at least 100 hours -- and if $.50 an hour is too much for a game (and I'm sure trippin has played more than me) -- you need a better income.

It is not that SMAC is bad, I think, it is that you are valuing your dollars too highly. If I include a coke and some popcorn, even a long Movie is $5 an hour -- 10 times the cost of an hour of SMACing.

Consider it entertainment -- and for me, the only game which I have (and I buy 10 or so a year) which has delivered better per-hour cost is probably CIV II -- and I have had it for a lot longer.

Angst is a poor companion -- lighten up!

Weird... for once I completely agree with trippin' on TWO posts.. WOW!

Anyhow, I don't think I've played in 3-4 weeks either. I've moved away from SMAC in both directions. I will, however, try it again when patch 4 comes out. If I'm unsatisfied, I will try to pawn SMAC off as an average game to some newbie for $15 (think I'll pull it off?).

I doubt I'll be impressed. See you around.

You've deleted it from your hard drive, and say you won't reactivate it, but how much did you accomplish with it?

I know you didn't post results, but...

Did you beat the best single base Transcend ironman score on the One City Challenge?

Did you get close to a 12 pop base using only plant/harvest forest as your production for that base?

Did you win at Transcend before 2400 with every faction? Every win method? (including cornering the energy market with the Spartans)

Until you have, I don't think IMHO you can say you've beaten the AI

It may not have been a respectable win, ie. I hit someone with a pipe, but when they are a good foot taller than me, i didn't care how fair the fight would be. Basically, I just either had big balls, or i was stupid then. But I'm not scared of getting beat up, my cousin is a boxer, so I have learned how to tak ecare of myself... so if anybody wants to beat me up... i'll email you my address.

Yeah, as it happens, the death penalty (hanging) does still exist for two crimes in Britain: High Treason (killing or plotting to kill the Monarch) and Arson in Her Majesty's Dockyards (that's a hangover from the days of wooden ships, when our safety depended on our fleet and everyone was always trying to set fire to it!).
But the penalty for killing a Rave Queen is worse than that... it's lifetime deprivation of all known forms of techno... hehe

These guys might not still have much of an interest in the game but they have developed friendships here that they dont want to give up on that easily. I know what you are saying but I dont know for sure that you hear their side. Besides you should know that eveyone here is going to speak their mind and be respected for it rather than told to go somewhere else or get a life, I dont agree with you but I understand how you feel. Now if you want you can disagree with them but at least understand their side.
One thing...I am not speaking about me personally because I still like the game even though it has inferior single player. I also like Axis and Allies and the AI is an even bigger moron in that game than this. But that is just me, I think even if I didnt play anymore I would still probably like to keep in touch with you all.And if I throw a rant in once in awhile you dont have to agree but you could accept it as my opinion. . I don't want to insult you Fenix, but, damn man, if you can't tell THOSE 2 engines apart you're retarded (once again, no offense is intended).

Originally, SC was SUPPOSED to use the same engine, but it was met with mixed feelings at E3 a year or so after WC2, so they scrapped it, and wrote a completely new engine.

Nell - if you have ***good*** conch steaks, they are almost better than, well, you know... But outside of the keys, you're kind of stuck.

Crawdads / crawfish / crayfish are a big, dumb freshwater prawn that are found in the swamp country of east Texas to Missisippi. They look a little more like miniature lobsters though, since they have little claws. They are dumb and macho (Kitty, keep your opinions to yourself ), since if you just drop a line with a hook right in front of them, they'll grab it - you don't even need bait - and they won't let go. (Hell, face it, they're southern. )

Gator has to be beaten out like abalone, and if you get good gator and a cook that knows what he's doing, it is damned fine - with a very subtle taste. (I cook Cajun and sea food, can you tell?)

Darkstar, yes you 'Bama boys can join in our feast. I'm of Virginia and Kentucky stock, but just lived in Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee, so cajun and bayou crawlin is an acquired taste, not a birthright for me. And Jimmytrick can bring some possum stew, but when he's not lookin', we'll just let the dawgs have it, and tell ol' JT how much we love Lady Belle's fine cooking. And aceplayer can come too, and fetch us all cajun coolaid and Mint Juleps for the dainty set. (I assume that means Kitty will have some cajun coolaid, but I better be careful of running at the mouth too much, since she and Nell are whipping ol' Jimmy and I in the SMACmasters challenge so far. )

Nell I think they repealed the death penalty for Arson in Her Majesties docks a couple of years ago. Imagine some student setting fire to Fred's weather map and getting tried with the death penalty a possibility. Ouch. (Now there's a reference incomprehensible to anyone outside the UK.) I think that's why they changed the law. So it's got to be High Treason. Unfortunately the title of Rave Queen isn't officially recognised in the UK.

I'd be surprised if you can't find them in Georgia as well, but I try to stay out of Duke country. Thems Dukes been mad at my family for a while now, must be almost 14 generations. I've just found them in that range I listed, since I used to live east of Houston a ways, and in Lake Charles, and used to go to Gulfport, MS a lot. I've never done anything in Bama and Georgia except drive through them in August, so you might have an idea why I kept on driving.

They sure are the dumbest critters alive though - they've got less brains than the mud at the bottom of the criks they live in. Teach 'em C and make 'em a little bitty keyboard that they could claw and peck on, and you've got Firaxis new programming staff for CivIII.

If there ain't crawdads and gators in Maine, then move out from under the glacier.

Those crawdads sound just like yabbies here in Oz; they're in all the creeks and ponds, and they'll take a line of string as quick as you can say "Jack Rob... Ma, I got another one!"

Who needs gators when we've got crocs, salties, the big kind that would use gators as tooth-picks.

Possums? We got possums by the zillion, and so have New Zealand now (heh, heh). But they're protected, and ours are so cute we wouldn't want to eat them anyway, though baby possums are the principal roadkill nowadays (they may have fallen off the highwires they're so fond of crossing).

I have gone Crawdaddying in lots of states. South Chicago, Los Angeles, Texas, mud bugs are everywhere. Maine doesn't need em, they have the larger cousin.

I don't care what excuse you want to put on it, putting out a product that has so many bugs, that it is not feasable to fix in 3 patches, is plain wrong. And people should complain about it. Firaxis is providing a product for comsumers, and it is their responsibility to provide a quality product. If SMAC was a car, it would have had enough recalls to qualify under the lemon law (mandated refund). I would like to see legislation signed that address programs.

HOWEVER! Since the current method is that your not buying a program, but a license to run a program, I doubt it will change anytime soon.

I hope however many patches it takes, that Firaxis doesn't sweep SMAC under a rug. V4.0 is incomplete, just as the game, demo, and the previous patches were. And V5.0 or whatever will be more of the same. I intend on helping in the bug fix list, but only because I think SMAC is worth the effort and not because Firaxis provides good (or not-so good) excuses.

and one more thing,
how can anyone look at a giant RAT and go "mmmmm, yummy".

They claim that it's FREE and a lot of ignorant people say "don't complain that battle.net sucks because it's free, blizzard made it and you ought to be thankful for it" but it's not free, because you buy the right to play on it when you buy their game. I'd have to say, they're an excellent company for making the initial game but very poor for service afterwards. You think it's bad now, just wait till Diablo II comes out, and hundreds of thousands of users will be on at one time! Server splits everywhere, the thing will freeze every 4 seconds. It wouldn't be so bad if they let you play their games using TCP/IP and the like but you're FORCED to use Bnet. Take a lesson from Blizzard indeed!

Kf6,

I don't know what kind of computer you use to play Battle.net on but you make it sound like some sort of horror story, i would MUCH rather play on Battle.net than mplayer, or kali, because on battle.net there is a HUGE selection of games to play in and for me (unlike you, or what you say) it rarely ever freezes for me, coincidence? I don't think so...and even in the rare occurance of a 'server split' does it matter? By the way, on Battle.net now there is usually 40,000 - 50,000 people at a time and that includes Diablo, Starcraft, and Brood War, i doubt Diablo2 is hyped enough to add THAT many people to it, heck im not even planning on buying it even though i owned part 1(Strategy is my type of game).

All in all Battle.net is a better service than you say it is, it's a way to play one of the best strategy games ONLINE free of cost...and you're...COMPLAINING?

Crawdads anyone? =P

Okay, okay, I am a yankee boy from Minnesota by birth. There. Now that that is out of the way.

I would like to note that Crawfish are yummy and you can find them in the far North as well. In Minnesota they sit the vicious winters out in the bottom of the local swimming hole. And yep, they're dumb as posts in the freezing North also.

Trippin daily obviously has never really played this game. I found it to be quite challenging in the higher difficulty levels. Trippin Daily must be playing in citizen mode. He thinks this game is such a cheap copy off of civ2. Trippin daily has a lot of personal problems to work out for himself. And last but not least... THIS GAME IS NOT DEAD, AND IT NEVER WAS!!! Where I live the game sold out the first day and is continuing to do well. I should know, I work at best buy.

"I should know, I work at Best Buy."
That explains it all.

My local Best Buy STILL has some of its ORIGINAL shipment of SMAC. Whoa. And got in a second, so they have LOTS of SMAC eating shelf space. But its not moving. You can tell by the number of boxes that have been worn, torn, crushed, vandalised... and everyonce in a while, re-shrink wrapped. They can't GIVE it away, and the employees aren't interested in pirating it.

Trip played SMAC for over 3 months. He played it on the highest levels of difficulty. He had loved it, to begin with. But in the end, he decided it was TOO close to Civ2. Trippin is no longer around, but you can email him if you want to know or debate it with him. Otherwise, you are taking cheap shots at a corpse... and that takes some big balls. Not!

Trippin probably didn't like Jedi Knight either just because it was "too much like the original Dark Forces."

But that is beside the point. Just because something doesn't sell doesn't mean it sucks. The eXtreme games suck majorly, yet they sell well, as do hunting games and boardgame conversions. Another game that did poorly was System Shock, one the best games of all time. So don't judge a games quality buy how much it sells, okay?

And what side of the issue are you chiming in on, Lord Muadib II? I agree... you can't judge a game's quality by just sales. But sales are the ONLY measure of success to most companies. Profit is their food, and money is their blood.

My point is that SMAC did poorly here. CtP did worse, to give you SMACophants out there something to chuckle over. But the store can't keep other things on the shelves. Such are the vagarities of the market place.

Whether SMAC is dead or not is up for debate. But this forum is certainly alive, fueled by conversations that never get anywhere.

I don't know who said this, but he's right. I hate games like Starcraft, SMAC, and other pathetic trash that trippin said. "They were too busy seeing who had a stick shoved further up their ass". The programmers, don't even pay attention to the crap they make. Although I would leave Meier out of this, he had nothing to do with this crap. I don't know who made starcraft, but whoever he is, he's just a wannabe of the person who created starcraft. Either that or the old man has run out of good ideas. The games are pathetic because it's the same units, but different look. You know SMAC is Civ2 with whole new graphics. In fact, I think SMAC is missing some of the good points of CIV2. To name one is that ----ing confusing map editors. This I know almost all of you will agree. I have almost NEVER seen anyone actually finish one of those ----ing maps. The NEW game is missing one concept:
IT ISN'T NEW! Haven't any of you played Civ2. Compare the games, without comparing the graphics (the only thing good about this game). You'll agree that this game is just Civ2 with an additional $12.00 fee to that --tch Brian Reynolds. But I do have to give him credit for something, making the game very Scientific (or some thing like that). I believe that this game should only be a patch that you download for Civ2 that is only worth $4.00. This game is so alike to Civ2, it should just be a sequel update patch.

itdoesntfit,

I've seen fit to ignore your two hundred odd posts in the last two days. However, I need your help with the following question.

Your 200 other posts are a collection of chopped up sentences, pidgeon english, poor spelling and poor sentence structure. How is it that you managed to all of a sudden put together the good spelling, punctuation sentence structure and coherent thoughts in the post that preceeds this one?

I'm always looking to improve my grammar and maybe you could help me.

Nothing is wrong with my grammar (I'll admit I make a bunch of typing errors). I think you mean dull. I also made a mistake "starcraft, but whoever he is, he's just a wannabe of the person who created starcraft." The second starcraft is suppose to be warcraft-

So could you guys stop posting about my bad grammar; you have that mixed up with dull.

For some reason, last post was cut off-I did not swear. Well I am sorry about the typographical errors, but nothing is wrong with my grammar. You must mean dull-as most people mean to say.
