I prefer to Build. Some of you prefer to Conquer. Which way is favored overall.

Builder then Conquerer. I suppose I could wipe everyone else out in 100 years like I did as the believers. But I prefer to play the whole game. I build a great society then use it to wipe the floor clean of the other factions. Sometimes within 10 years with a huge invasion force.

I prefer getting a game score and then then playing two more turns. One to build a horde of drop-hovertanks, and the second to sterilise the map of any other factions.

I like to build first, then conquer to the point of pounding my opponents into submission (though I usually leave the lovely Deirdre alone) and taking over their territory, then transcending.

Fast straight-up conquest on Transcend is largely a matter of luck - you have to have a fairly reasonable start location. I'm currently playing a transcend game in 2172 where I have yet to make contact with any other faction, though I'm in the lead and starting to poke around with naval forces - but nobody is on the nearby coasts within 20 squares of my home continent.

Builder, definitely.

Like the others, I prefer to build a great society ( small g, small s )and then use superior tech and infrastructure to wipe out my opponents.

Last game was a looong ( 2510 ) one, where I ( Morgan ) got every tech, and then eradicated Dierdre, Lal, and Miriam in succesion with Orbital-Drop Singularity Squads (24-12)and carrier-based Blink Singularity Gunships and Skybases (24-12).

I would have been content to Go transcendant, but lovely Dierdre and Lal, who were pact-brothers with me against Miriam, decided to stab me in the back...unfortunately for them, my Orbital Defense Pods stopped what would have been an otherwise devastating PB attack.
When I got to Deirdre's last city, she refused to surrender...so I gave her the interrogation she so richly deserved.

In general though, I fare poorly against Conqerors early...but If I can make it to mid game, I am in the clear.

I hope for geographical isolation early.

Builder, definitely, although I have tried conquer. Once I have defeated one or two factions, it gets really tedious moving around 30-40 military units each turn and managing unruly captured bases --each turn ends up taking 10 minutes or more. Building facilities and researching and exporing and doing diplomacy is much more entertaining to me than blasting 10 of Miriam's plasma sentinals with my shard 'copter every year and popping in a drop garrison in yet another colony.

I usually transcend or get diplomatic victory by 2400 (transcended as U of P on thinker at 2311 once).

Builders: I suggest you all try The Huge Map of Planet. It really favors builders because it has about 10 good landing sites which are highly separated by natural barriers (ocean, sea and land fungus) and abundant native life. Factions are usually widely separated. I have never made contact with all 7 factions before the Empath Guild is built (usually by Dierdre about 2200 or shortly before). (Also, you get that cool poster with the Primus strategy guide, and I like to follow along with the poster).

To build, to reach a kind of social nirvana has to be my favourite. Especially now that Planet can bite back a bit more than the Civ world could.

by the way, what does evryone think about the different ways of winning? I am unsure myself...they sort of seem like ways of 'buying' a military victory without playing it through if you are powerful enough, yet it seems natural that Morgan should be able to do this...

To conquer is human, to build divine!

Put me down as a builder. But, somehow, something always gets into me, I start building 100% combat units, then line em up and knock em down.

I hope to contain the this in my PBEM games.

But if that sunofabuck builds another base on my border...........

Most of us like to Build and then destroy. I generally decide to Transcend peacefully, but occaisionally I'll do massive Drop attacks right before Transcendance.

I second that vote for Huge Map of Planet. It is great for Building up an empire. I always play on it. I've even tweaked the Map up a bit. I added the Canyon (by the Mesa which I rose up a bit) and the Borehole (on the NW part of the northern island). I've also threw in a few more squares of land, a few more rivers and resources, and a bunch more Pods everywhere.

builder, the problem: if someone declares vandetta against you, and you have to built big forces: you easily begin to play a little more agressiv

Builder-conqueror with any factions. It's fun to Transcend as Miriam on Transcend w/o Unity pods, and even more fun to harras everyone as Morgan (magnanimous Santiago, cooperative Miriam etc. ). No fun if do only one thing.
I'm builder (when last faction on other pole on Huge map ). I don't like pure builder/conquer games.

P.S. And I hate FM.

I agree. I don't like FM either. That -3 Green is a detrement. You're killing the enviroment resulting in increased sudden fungal growth. Plus, you're increasing the change of Melting the Ice Caps.

I prefer EcoFreindly building. That's one reason why I like Morgan. All he needs is Wealth to get that +1 energy per square which won't hurt the enviroment.

I prefer to build, although I'm not against pounding any aggressive factions that get a bit pushy.

I've also had fun becoming a Pact Brother of someone like Deirdre or Morgan and sending some choppers to assist them in a war against an aggressive faction (usually Sister Miriam) and let them take the bases. I don't need the inefficiency inherent in a base on the other side of the globe from my HQ.

builder, until i'm at the point where my tech lead is so great, that i can conquer the world with only a few units.

after taking over the entire world, save 1 city, then i become a builder again.

If you want to win the game, too easily, play Conquer.

Aggresively Defensive Builder. I like to build up the infrastructure, but maintain a small "defense force" of Choppers and Locusts, which can be expanded when in need. But if Miriam, Santiago or Yang starts to piss me off, my army goes into an offensive which wipes them out in 10-40 turns (depends on the map size) - drop garrisons rule .

Builder. My most militaristic games have been with the Hive as an aggresive builder, but still a builder.

You know, I used to be a conquerer but when I tried a building game and remained relatively peaceful with everybody except for Miriam I got twice the points in half the time! I am definatly a builder now.
