Hey, it's a cool game. I played it for several hours yesterday. (Deity, 3 cities, second best) Just a game of testing of curse, but it was pretty cool...

Civ 2 is the game that has the "longest time on my HD" record... It's been there ever since I got it (when was that ? 95 ? 96 ? can't remember...). And before that there was the original Civ (which I don't have anymore )... Aredhran |

The original _DOS_ Civ, I had to give it to my dad to keep, or I'd have never finished University. It took me 15 years anyway, since then came WinCiv, and then CivII. If you want I can rescue the oldies and send them to you, Aredhran. And now that I've got a modem AND CivII Gold MP... we might be confronting oursevels on old grounds, I never did Civ MP... |

I still play Civ2 sometimes. One thing about it that's unusual (these days) is that it doesn't require the CD to be in the drive; you lose the Wonders videos, the music and the High Council, but gameplay isn't affected. So when my CD driver was down recently, Civ2 was all I could play, other than Minesweeper and the like.

CivII doesn't require the CD during gameplay, but CivII Multiplayer Gold does. But...Something that Microprose probably doesn't want you to know: You can install CivII Gold, then play it with the original CivII CD in the CD drive! What this means of course is that if you have both (which a lot of people probably do), you can play multiplayer with someone without buying two CivII Gold CD's. Of course, you'd probably play SMAC instead, since you can play it without the CD as well. |

Actually, you need the CivII Gold disk to start the game up. Then you can remove it and start another game on another computer for multiplayer mayhem. |

I think civ2 will be on my hardrive forever. It has a long run, but I think master of magic beats it out. I still play scenarios in civ2. I might play a full game soon. Too much work so little game time. |

Where can I get Civ for Windows without buying one of those boxes with several other (not so desirable) games in them? My brother has Civ on his old Amiga, but I would like to own it myself on my PC. |

MoSe, the DOS Civ is what I was talking about. I actually never bought "WinCiv". I did not buy Civ MP either. How big is THE original ? Could you possibly zip it up to me ?(Just for a kick of nostalgy) Aredhran

I got dos-Civ in a compilation. Sid Meier's Classic Collection. Four games, Civilization, Colonization, Pirates Gold and Railroad Tycoon Deluxe (not as good as the original) all with original manuals.Aredhran - Civ is 1.7mb for the english version. ~Rackam

Yes, yes, yes.Civ II is, I think, the best computer game yet written, and I was so hoping for SMAC to improve on Civ and take it to the next level. Unfortunately I have been on the whole disappointed. SMAC is a well presented and slick game, but it lacks the originality of Civ. I mean, what does it matter if you call it shields or minerals. Thr graphics are also too confused. The 3d map is a lovely touch but it seemed to make navigating units around more difficult and clumsy, as well as the units themselves, which are difficult to recognise, not at all like the iconic renderings of a Legion or Dragoons in Civ II. My final note has to be that Civ II, (superlative) gameplay aside, really draws on the player's imagination like no other. The relationships between the advances and units and wonders seem almost second nature. Having said all this, one touch I did like were some of the commentaries for the technologies in SMAC, particularly the quotes from great Western philosophers like Immanuel Kant. However it was a shame that most of these quotations had little synergy with the social/tech. advances with which they were associated. SMAC is a good game. However CIV II is in my opinion the best, and if our aim is merely to take the same gameplay on to the next level playability...CIV is going to remain a hard pillar to topple. |

Civ is out on MicroProse's budget label. I've seen it many times in Electronics Boutique - they even call it just "Civ". Anyone know where I can get a copy of Civ II? |

Actually, you don't need the CivII Gold CD at all, once it's installed, if you have the CivII original CD in the drive. Not having any CD in the drive while playing would work until you launch your spaceship which would then cause the game to crash because it can't find the files. For CivII you can bypass this by copying all movie files to directories of the same name (as on the CD) on your hard drive, then editing civ.ini so that the parameter "whereiscd" points to that folder. Chowlett: As far as where to buy CivII, I've seen it at Best Buy, but you might find better prices at excite.com or something (used). Also, I think you can buy it from the distributor directly (go to the Microprose site). |

Oh, I remember that old time when my friends and I played Civilization on my amiga... all summer.... we were up to 4 players at one time... (sort of hot seat) The first one built a city, then a settler, and then the next one got the settler to build his town and so on, until all had built their own town. Then we helt a budget, to make sure that everyone got the money their cities earned. That was the REAL civ-times... (Man, I wish you could turn back the time a few years...) |
