Once again, I lose a base to an asteroid. 40+ turns of developement flushed down a borehole. At least this time no SP's were in it.

Btw, I have before and after screenshots for those who have never seen one. If anyone would like me to send them, send a note to [email protected].

Personally, I hate random events and I always turn them off. I don't think they enhance the game... it's just an annoyance to be told that a hailstorm has suddenly destroyed all solar collectors near X base, or that all the mines near some other base have been wiped out. All it really means is that you have to waste time re-terraforming the area, which for my money doesn't really add much to the fun of the game.

I don't know whether the asteriod strike gets turned off along with the other random events, but I've never seen it and I'd like to see the screenshots (I've mailed you as well).

Thanks in advance,
Nell

It's a myth? Well, as I play with random events turned off, you may well be right... I've no way of knowing However, I find the following in the script.txt file...

#ASTEROID
#xs 440
#caption Chief Planetologist
Major Asteroid Strike on Nessus Prime! All Nessus Mining Stations destroyed

... and also:

#EATTHIS
#xs 440
#caption Chief Planetologist
Major Asteroid Strike near $BASENAME0! Massive casualties! Dust clouds will reduce global energy production for next ten years.

... and since these entries appear alongside other random event entries which I *have* experienced (such as the Prometheus Virus epidemic and the solar-collector-destroying hailstorms), I had kinda assumed that the asteriods were real random events.

There is also a text string in terran.exe which includes the word "asteroid", which lends weight to my theory, but as I don't have my text string extractor installed on this computer, I can't quote the exact phrase here. Oh well.

Still, if I do receive pictures of Rackam both avec and sans underwear, then at least it'll give me something else to point my eyes at apart from my impressive screenshots of Obi-Wan Kenobi's light sabre

Nell... not a Granny yet, nor even a Mummy, but certainly a very proud Auntie

Do you play the Hive? I've never been hit with an asteroid, but the Hive was hit in two different games. I assume the shots are different for you compared to the AI.

Asteroid strikes are real! I'm playing PK and got nailed with one. There's now two Garland Craters on the map I've also played games where AI's have got nailed (usualy whoever is ahead at the time).

I've played SMAC a lot,and always end up way ahead, but have never been whacked by an asteroid. Although I have noticed it's existence.

Thanks for sending the screenshots... woah, it must severely suck to lose a 31 pop base to a random event!!

Nell... now *really* glad that she plays with random events turned off!

PS: Jimmy... sheesh, there was me getting all excited about the prospect of the boxer shorts... you really shouldn't mess with an old woman's mind like that, I might have a heart attack or something...

Losing a size 31 base was bad, but far worse was that I intended to use it as a missle platform against Miriam after she'd finished with Yang.

Random events OFF?! Where's your sense of fair play? Always play with random events on, otherwise it is too easy to build up bases like the ones described above without any real risk. :p

Aww come on... where's the great gameplay in the sudden disappearance of mines, solar collectors etc? SMAC is supposed to be a strategy game, and I don't think that the random disappearance of tediously built improvements (or, for that matter, the random increasing of energy levels at certain bases, etc) adds anything to my strategic plans. Turning random events off also means you don't get the *good* ones, don't forget, so it's not just a cheat to help myself out. To me, random events in a strategy game like SMAC are a bit like introducing random events into, say, chess... you spend 20 moves sneaking your rook into a marvellously strategic position, only to have it suddenly removed from play by a meteor strike. Where's the point in that? I don't think Kasparov would think much of it How how can you create a reliable strategy if random bits of it are going to get knocked out for no very good reason?
All random events really mean is that, every 20 turns or so, you have to build an extra terraformer and rebuild your lost terrain enhancements. Pointless and annoying, if you ask me.

Enhancements are easy to rebuild, since when an event occurs (apart form asteroids) you just stack the formers. 9 super-formers with WP can put in a borehole in 1 turn. 5 can replace mag-tube/forest, 6 will replace mag-tube/farm/solar-cells with another 4-5 for soil enrichers, etc.
