Topic: attacking enemy bases

I love Alpha Centauri, but there is one thing I can't stand. Sometimes (actually, most of the time) I can't attack an enemy's bases because of the diagonal movement restriction. No matter where I move my units, I can't enter the base. It's like chess! Plus computer players can move into adjacent squares with no problem. Is there a special tech you need to move into any square? Anyone else have this problem?

astrogirl1,Are you moving with the numeric keypad, mouse or right/left/up/down keys? Portable computer (touchpad) or desktop? JAMiAM |

astrogirl - you SHOULD be able to move into any legal square (i.e. so ships on land or swimming infantry) subject only to zone of control restrictions. So it is something with your input, or possibly a bizarre problem, but not part of the game. |

MtG,And all you code jockeys wonder why there are so many bugs in SMAC. LOL. Shame about our DW2xxx game. Any thoughts? JAMiAM |

Astrogirl - Have you turned off the num-lock when using the keypad? And if there is an enemy unit BESIDE your unit, I don't believe that you would be allowed to send a troop in to capture the unoccupied base. (I can't swear to that though. Can't remember trying.)Jam - DW2xxx game? -Darkstar |

Darkstar,DW2xxx refers to a pbem game that was created for MtG, myself and three others that experienced an... anomaly (I won't say the B word in front of you ) when it was opened by the first player in our game. It seems to be a problem specific to his machine/install/setup that caused the game to go into scenario editor mode. BTW, zones of control do not affect movement into or out of bases, friendly or otherwise. Astrogirl's problem is probably: 1) Num lock turned off, as you noted. 2) Use of an input device, other than a mouse or the number keypad. As she has not yet responded as to her methods and devices used to move units, it makes it hard to pin it down any finer than that. JAMiAM |

Hey! Thanks to all you guys who replied. Well, I use the keyboard up, down, right, and left keys. I had the numlock on. Was it supposed to be off? I just turned it off. My computer is a desktop. I hope I remembered to answer all the questions!! |

Use the number keys 7,9,1,3The first time I played CivII, I must started three games by only using the arrow keys. |

Oh. Yeah, we had that problem with Flo's machine in the PBEM I got included in. Been meaning to ask a couple of questions related to that elsewhere.Hey, with all the things that aren't in the Manual, do you expect me to BELIEVE it, Chowlett? Besides, its been a LONG time since I left an enemy beside one of my troopers while assaulting a city in SMAC. -Darkstar |

astrogirl1,To elaborate on Gixxer's reply, use the 1,7,9,3 keys for diagonal movement. Use the 2,4,8,6 keys for down, left,up,right movement. Leave your num lock ON to enable these. When I "graduated" from Colonization to CivII, I was so used to using the "arrow" keys that I had to make a cardboard cutout to prevent me from using them, out of habit. Good luck. JAMiAM |
