Yeah, they exist. They had a thread on here a long while back (it has probably been claimed by the FIRAXIS thread fairy). They had several people saying they had seen it and what it was like and all. They have two types. One is on Nessus, it knocks out all the minig stations, the other is like a planetbuster hitting your best city (yes, and always that city), or cluster of cities. So don't stack SP's in one city and your safe.

There's somethin pretty wrong with the asteroid random event for Nessus Mining Stations. If the asteroids can hit that, why don't they knock out other orbital improvements in the sky?

Univarse9: It's just one asteroid and it strikes Nessus (which is a moon). And even a large mass like an asteroid has an astronomically low probability of hitting a satelite.

Univarse9: to follow up on LoD's response, please realize that all Nessus Mining Stations are on Nessus and are not satellites like the skyfarm, power, and defense satellites. Thus an asteroid can take out all of the Nessus Mining stations and, at best would take out one satellite.

Uh...okay. Instead, hows bout this:
After the impact, the debris left over destroys one-or-two satellites.Better?

To answer the original question, I've been impacted 4 times now, latest game has had 2!

But, I discovered an upside to being hit by an asteroid. Normally a tree farm/hybrid forest square will give 3-2-2, but in the asteroid crater, it gives 3-3-2.

As a novice to SMAC, I prefer to peruse these Forums for tips to help improve my game play. However, the strikes, of both types have happened to me. The last, the most unusual. Playing as the UoP, I was in Vendetta against Yang's Hordes. I had captured the Hive, complete with three secret projects. I was using the base as a staging area to move on to other bases when the strike occured. Base, projects, & forces, all destroyed. The remaining crater was named "Garland", the second one so named on the map. (Confusing? Yep!) Secondly, in the Secret Projects Reports, the destroyed projects were highligted in red, base of creation was listed as "None", and the ownwership was chalked up to "ALIENS"! All were lost for the remainder of the game. That made my day! You'd think that if you can capture a project from another faction, it should be just as reasonable to have the option to recreate the project (if so inclined) if it is destroyed. A unit is destroyed, build another one. Same should hold true for Secret Projects. If it's destroyed, put it back in the list and try again. Food for thought Firaxis!
