I am an experienced UoP player who wants to investigate all the hype over War games. I hear constant slams to builders in this forum and was wondering if anyone could offer suggestions on wether to turn down my game level, what social molds work, etc. My choice is going to be Spartans...the Hive pisses me off too much to play as, and My hatred of Deidre, along with the pathetic nature of the Bible-Thumpers...Spartans are the logical choice.

Use the UoP to be a high-tech built-up Breaker. Get all the techs, build the Space Evalator, build up your cites as much as you can, mass-produce 24/12/1^4 Drop units, and go on a giant killing spree.

Who are you callin' pathetic? I play the Believers most games and they can punt you puny Brainiacs back to Earth.

Don't disregard the Hive... I hate the ideology too, but :

That immunity to efficiency gives you excellent support, good police and growth.

Later on you can use Wealth for buildup periods (I don't want to call it peace ), that's a 30% industry bonus right there, and switch to Power for the +2 morale to wage war.

It's really a mean war machine, and the free PD doesn't hurt, either.

Well I play mostly as the Spartans and they are pretty good as breakers. Normally I try and get Diedre into a compliant pact (ie try and nearly wipe her out until she offers me all her techs.) at the end of the first expansion phase. Then I get her green techs and start with the green social choices. It depends what social advances you have what you should go for but avoid free market.

Then I go for the highest tech faction and try and get all their techs. Normally if you are clever and use Elite units in a good mix you can take on their higher level troops (if they have them)

After that it should be easy going. I normally have all my perimeter bases producing a constant flow of troops and my internal bases building as you would in a builders game. (sometimes I have some bases which are so efficient they make great war factories and I use those as well.)

The difficult thing is getting your troops en-masse to where they are required without leaving yourself short elsewhere.

first of all...BELIEVERS SUCK! AS IN BAD, TERRIBLE PATHETIC WORTHLESS TRASH! anyways...i would love to play as the hive, but I would become nautious, because, although they may not be the weakling leagons of relion nuts, they still are crazy...and I am counting on them to be my primary opponent. im done ranting....thanks for the advice.

Whirlwind, play a MP game against cousLee and you'll understand the error of your ways... He'll wipe your arse with the Believers in no time at all, trust me on that one !

Actually, if you want to try the Dark side, you CAN play the UoP. Just be a Mad-Dog crazed psychotic bent on world domination with little to no skills at diplomacy like the AI. In the beginning, go for Impact weapons, Foils, Command Nexus, and No Food/No Mineral restrictions. Stage attacks against all nearby factions as you choose once you can crank out quality morale level troops. Once you learn THAT at Impact/Missile weapon level, step down to the Hive and Absolute Conquest with Hand and Laser technology.

My *favorite* two Absolute Conquest factions are UoP and Hive.

I don't use the Believers as they were BUILT to beat the game on mad-dog war-monger strategy.

Spartans were built for the small and tiny map bloodfest, and are second only to Believers for the tremendous damage they can inflict from turn one.

With Hive, you use that industry and support bonuses to get the numbers to send the Blue Tide of Yangism rushing over an opponent's city like the Storm Water Rush of a Hurricane.

With the UoP, you have to make every unit count, requiring more finesse than the others, and use every tech advantage you can get. As they can easily gain a 4(+)-1 odds advantage over the AI in very early game, they can be a tremendous power quickly.

While I enjoy using the Gaian faction, it just doesn't bring the sheer joy of the Hive or UoP to my games. It just seems WRONG to build boreholes like street lights when playing the Green. But even the AI does it...

Morgan is a faction I think is too cool for their own skin. But unfortunately, I have really bad luck playing them. I keep trying, but it takes a ridiculous amount of new games to get a start where I am only bordered by three opponent factions with 2 of the 3 sharing red city grid. (I'm serious. TERRIBLE seeding luck with them).

I don't have much to say about the PeaceKeepers. They are just so bland that I don't try them out very often...

But yeah, you can play War Horde using any of the Factions... some just work better than the others for it.
