I know newbies are often laughed at, but i still need help. I just bought the game 1/3rd way through reading the manual. I got the basics, but the more complex stuff i still don't get. If somebody would kindly explain to me the most complex elements of the game it would be great.

I think we'd all be happy to help. But the best thing to do starting out is take the "tours" in the game and just start playing.
Once you have more specific questions, there are a lot people here who can and will do there best to give you a helpful answer.
SMAC is too involved a game to give any useful answers to such a general request.

Just build forest and rovers, maxgun/noarmor.
The forest grows. Send rovers in packs to kill everything. It not very complicated. These guys just wanna make you think they are SMACGODS. They are not! {i am}

Stick everything on auto - the governors, the formers, people to explore - and see what happens.

Yes, this way you'll *really* see how bad the AI can get, and understand why you can always beat the computer.
