I liked the demo, but after reading all these negative posts I'm wondering if anyone here really likes the game? These are the complaints I seem to keep reading:
1)Victory sucks.
2)No diversity in gameplay.
3)Factions become boring
Now does this game become old that fast? Man, I'm glad I came here before forking out the cash! Are there any reasons why one should buy this game?

Dude, this is an excellent game. It's just that its been out for a while and some of the novelty is gone. I highly recommend it, but make sure you download the latest patch.

It's a great game. Will be even better when the next patch comes out!! But it's fun regardless.

It is a great game. Few other games, if any, has the replayability of this one. Victory doesn't suck, at least not for me. The diversety in gameplay is huge compared to other games I've played. As for the factions, well I've only played a dozen of games so far, but compare it to other games; Starcraft has three different sides for example and I don't find them boring yet.
I can see how it could get a little boring when you constantly beat the computer without problems on the highest level, but I haven't got that problem and I'm sure this is true for 95+ percent of the others (Correct me if I'm wrong). Even if you do get that good this game allowes you to change a lot of paremiters to make it different. And there's always multiplayer.
I have games I've played once before tossing them into the closset and I have games I play every week. This one is one of the latter, no doubt.

This game rules! If you get bored you can:

-create your own factions (better yer, download em from <a href="http://www.juhu.de/hartel/alpha/">a really good site</A>

-or create your own maps or scenarios

Also this games replayability value is huge.

I love the game... Its challengers (Xwing Alliance & Baldurs Gate Sword Coast) have come and gone, and I still come back to SMAC.

True, I would like a bigger pat on the back when beating the AI, but when you play against GIs, the game really comes into its own.

To explain the Victor sucks threads:

Victor likes SMAC, Victor defnds SMAC, flamers hate SMAC, therefore flamers hate Victor.

SMAC is a good game; some want to tanish its reputation for whatever reason, they are wrong. I hope they won't get in your way of enjoying a perfectly good game. They seem to scare people away alot, and its sad, because SMAC is one of the best games out right now. Some of my earlier enthusiasm may have died down because I have played it so much, but don't let that stop you.

SMAC is the best TBS game I have seen. There are still a few problems stupid formers, stupid governers to name two. I tend to micromanage everything so those don't bother me that much. Be sure to get patch 3.

Just about everybody here, I think, likes SMAC. Otherwise they wouldn't be posting here! But still, there are complaints about minor things. This is because the better the game itself is, the closer it is scrutinized on the small stuff. I can't speak for everybody here, but the vast majority like SMAC a lot.

The single player game rocks. I have to agree that it's the best turn based strat there is to date. I really like things like "Construct Road to" and the other stuff that makes management a little easier. Even though a lot of the people on here say they prefer to micromanage everything, I tend to like a fair mix of automation and micromanagement.. For example, "Automatic Tubes" is very handy once you have a huge roadway network through out your area as a blueprint for the formers.
-
I do think they could streamline the multiplayer game though. For example, the host generates the map and sends it out to everyone.. In essense, you're downloading a map from the host of the game. That's just plain silly. Why doesn't the host send the random seed to everyone and have everyone generate the map at the same time? That's *much* faster.
-
Take a look at Civ2:Gold.. It's multiplayer over the internet is much quicker than SMAC's. There's almost no set up time and each turn is done fairly quickly. There's even a "Speed up unit movement" option, and you can resume saved games in it.

SMAC is a good TBS game. I don't consider it the greatest TBS of all time, but its certainly one of the better to be released. Probably the best of 1999. There are some game play and balance issues with many posters here, but we do find it to be a worthwhile game to own and play.

Victor - No, people don't like you here because you are an extremely arrogant asshole who likes to casts insults about much too freely. I hope you do that on purpose and not as a social function. Otherwise, we should take up a collection to send you to Finishing School.

We have a new project/account starting and even though I am working more now than 3 weeks ago I still have not started to be able to shake the SMAC Forum Bug.

(I even descended to the Non Smac Forum - Scary)

One of my workmates wonders by about once a day and if he sees the Alpha Centauti Forum Button on my Task Bar (which is most of the time) he'll boom in a deep false bass voice "SID MEIER'S...ALPHA CENTAURI!"

When I go out to lunch with friends/work mates there is always at least 1 moment that I think I could be back responding to such and such a thread.

"Thanks. Had to be said. I was just lucky enough to say it first. Victor can be civil, he just seems to rarely be so on Games..."

-Civil? What do you and trip know about civil? I mean aren't YOU the one who called me an "asshole," and lets not talk about the number of *'s in trip's thread. I am not terribly nice on Games, that's true, but I am civil at all times. Only one flamer has ever truly gotten me riled up enough, chrisk... ugh... all others pale in comparison.

Victor, I don't recall you being CIVIL very often when you post here in Games. Its all Flaming and telling people they are stupid sods (and worse) and newbies should keep their pie holes shut until they are vets. That sort of general venting. I have investigated Off-Topic, and while I rarely post there, have seen you be quite reasonable and interesting.

You are QUITE correct. I insulted you first in this thread. In fact, I don't recall you having EVER insulted me. But I do remember you cutting into other people out of the blue because they said "SMAC SUCKS CAUSE..." and that sort of thing. If you haven't flamed anyone in a while, and are surprised at STILL getting insulted and torched, it can take a LONG time for people to forget. Humans are silly that way. But we got over Yin and Trippin's loud and unusual manner, so we must be able to get over anything.

He is a Civ 3 man now. Yes, part of hell did freeze over that day. I am trying to warm it up, but a large part froze over, so it may take awhile. I am stronger than Yin. I am part of the light side, I still flame brightly and flagrantly. Victor, its your attitude on the games forum that is annoying. Just like you find my atitude towards you annoying, we find your attitude on here towards us annoying. I have read what you haev posted in the off topic forum, you are a whole lot cooler and open to other peoples ideas over there. But here, you have this 'holier than thou' attitude about you. It was starting to cool down a bit until my man Tfs (big round of applause) whipped out his flamethrower. But don't blame him, blame me, I enjoy taking the blame. Hey Trippin!

Yin came on board, and started the "I found these bugs, and I have these problems, and Jeff wasn't nice to me!". Then it went to "...and now Jeff is being mean ignoring me..." and then it became "...And now Jeff is going to ban me! Crusade Brothers! Crusade!". Or something like that.

You walked in. Said hello. And was a right cheery fellow. And opened up all four of those barrels on that flamer of yours. Both you and Yin were civil, just LOUD about things. Yin was certainly more VERBOSE and prolific, I think.

Any other connections are in your mind.

Yin hasn't gone to the Dark side. He's gone to the GREEN side. I am thinking he's getting a check out of the deal. But I could EASILY be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

If you will excuse me, its late, and I have a full day of forum browsing tomorrow... (Work considers it communication exercises, surprisingly enough. Anyone jealous?)

Hey Darkstar, I never had four barrels on my flamethrower. At least I don't think I have. I've never seen that side of the flamethrower. I'm smart, I stay away from that side. And everybody, if I flame you, it is more often than not, my way of getting things done when everybody else has failed or won't try. My default "attack" is a kind flame. Unless of course you are actually a nice person, then HOPEFULLY I will be smart enough to actually be really civil. Its just that Victor Galis got on my nerves. This lil boy (yes, he is in high school, even though he does talk like an english proffesor with a stick up his ass) thinks that him and a few others are God's gift to the gaming community. Veterans this, Newbies that... Grow up now won't you Victor. Old Warrior already made it plainly obvious, it should be even to you too, that this newbie/veteran thing you have going here is so stupid and without any base. I'll let Tfs dissect your next 'rebutal.' <laughs> Maybe after the tenth time around of being made an idiot, you will realize you are wrong to act as you do. If you want to treat me like ****, go ahead, the thing is, I don't care how you treat me. But when you treat people who have only been on these forums for a few days like garbage, does that incourage them to post and contribute. I don't tihnk it does. That is what pisses me off. Go ahead, insult Tfs, old warrior, Darkstar, and I like there is no tomorrow. But leave everyone else alone. I know we can handle your petty insults. Some, unfortunately, cannot.

On civility and name calling- I don't call people names, unless you consider being called a newbie being called names (in which case you're a more radical veteran supremacist than me.) I will not revert to profanity to get my point across, it seems so immature, so base and vile; maybe you have a diferent opinion. I did not start the flamming; some people will say that, but they weren't here in march and Febuary where half the threads were "SMAC sucks" or some variant. Every time someone brings up one of those threads, I do what I've been doing for months; defend SMAC. It is no longer possible not to be condescending to an anti-SMACer, becuase I've been at it so long, it begins to wear me down to a level where rationality has no place. The reason I think that this forum is inferior is becauase this is the forum that once had about 50% anti-SMACist threads, the non-SMAC forum has always been esentially the same.

"On civility and name calling- I don't call people names, unless you consider being called a newbie being called names"

Once again VG's memory slips. Here's a choice excerpt posted _quite_ recently:

"anyhow, when I say newbie, i mean anyone who acts according to my definition of it (making them scum)"

So let's see, VG, hmmmmm, according to you:

Newbie == Scum, Scum == Newbie

So that must mean, when coupled with your statement above, that you believe that assigning the label "scum" to a person is not calling them a name. Right? LMAO!

Or, are you willing to acceed that "scum" is an insulting term to use in reference to a fellow human being? Don't forget:

Scum == Newbie, Newbie == Scum

Yes, VG, you _have_ been calling people names. And if you equate "newbie" with "scum" in your mind, then "newbie" assumes a derogatory connotation in all of your posts.

And don't think that just because you chose "scum" for your four letter s-word, means your behavior is any better than those "****" users whom you so readily condemn.

What a crock!

Queequeg,

I'm still playing a Builder game even though SMAC is as slow as morasses on my P133 (and I'm micromanaging everything). The problem is that AI technology isn't yet up to the point where computers can challenge humans, even on unequal terms. Even on Transcend, the computer rapidly ceases to be a challenge and people get bored. For remedies, read Panzer75/TheHelperMonkey's post.

Victor,

If you do something wrong in public, you can bet your *** that someone will criticise you. SMAC isn't different. There ARE bugs in SMAC, admit it. And if someone doesn't whine about it, how is FIRAXIS going to know **and do something about it**? (Where's that bug list, FIRAXIS?) And if the criticisms are unfounded, Sid, Brian, Tim, Jeff et al. can just ignore them (though it would be better if they responded). Let the whiners post their heart out. Perhaps FIRAXIS might learn something.

"...they weren't here in march and Febuary where half the threads were "SMAC sucks" or some variant."

Victor, are you on FIRAXIS' payroll? You're defending SMAC like it was some sort of religion. The bugs were probably even worse at that time before Enhancement(?) 3.0 was out. If you think SMAC is so perfect, perhaps you should be playing SMAC 1.0 ONLY.

"SMAC sucked" was 50% or so of the threads on the GAME forum in mid-february to march? Could that be because people payed big bucks for a game that was just a rotten tease? Yep. That was why Patch v2.0 was RUSHED, I repeat, RUSHED to the web site. Heck, Firaxis DELAYED the release of SMAC until they had the PATCH READY. That, as related by Brian, Jeff, and Tim. They took a roasting on that, and my flame thrower will go off on that as long as I can type.

Posting "SMAC Sucks!" is very appropriate here in Games. That is what its for... anything relating to SMAC. You know what? If I had Yang raining down PBs on my head in every game where he was over 16 tiles from me, I'd be screaming it to. Like you, I don't let him live that long, Victor.

SMAC is much less a tease now that PATCH v3 has closed several bugs, but its still not the game it should have been. Bet that Patch v4 will be the last patch until SMACX. Not because they fixed everything. Just because they don't care. SMACX will need to be patched though, as they won't have closed out HALF the PROGRAMMING bugs. And I expect the same out of Civ3. Too many fan boys and girls out there that will run out and buy it cause its got "Civ" in the title.

Go ahead. Defend a company that screws your wallet. But some people expect higher levels of quality and service when they spend what they consider a sizable chunk of money for something. And some of us have a long memory.

Since Firaxis hasn't said this (at least not publicly):

TFS - Thanks.

Finding bugs in SMAC version 3.0 isn't hard as I'd like it to be. Its such a large and complicated work, you have to expect a few odd ones to have slipped through. I am just surprised I keep finding NEW (to me) ones. I'm not the greatest SMACoholic around, but I do expect to play between 4 to 8 hours most days. Guess that is proof enough I like the game though...
