SMAC 2/CIV3
so what?
new units...new maps...new techs (?)...new forums...new bugs (!)...new AI (my S...)
I really can't think of anything, that would be completaly new. AI? Nope, this part of games will never be as good as "they" advertise. AI in PACMAN is better than in most games today (because it's a simple game). You simply can't simulate human behavior with math formulas and c++ code.
That is way games like Quake:Arena go multiplayer. Yeah, MP is a "bit" different for turn-based games, but that's life. Don't get me wrong, I love Civs and Smacs, but I think I would rather see some fixes before I see new releases.

Why are you talking comparing multiplay and computer AI? They are two different things.

Please, read the post by Brian Reynolds to some news-grups from yesterday.
(Wich I posted here too )
You would find out that FIRAXIS is going to do the patch 4.0. So you will get a fix before the new game is released.

If you read his Usenet post carefully, he only mentions upgrades and enhancements to SMAC. He doesn't mention the patch specifically. This may be nitpicking, but there is a difference.

I'd be happy for many months if they would just fix all the problems (big and small) with v4.0.

I'd be _REALLY_ happy if they would improve the throughput of Direct IP multiplayer games.

But alas, I have no confidence that they will do either one in a timely fashion, if at all.

Incidentally, Quake III includes three bots for practise or to make up the numbers. Based on previous experience, these are almost as deadly as championship players.

Being pessimistic about the A.I doesn't help - as it goes, the SMAC A.I has only two main flaws - organising a sea invasion, and wasting minerals by constantly switching base production.

Shining - The AI can swap production without loss of minerals. At least as far as the instant swaps it makes.
