How do groups work? Whenever I make one, it doesn't seem to be any different from before, with all the units miving separately etc.

You're right...Coco Clown, Maybe it's fixed in v3.0 but whenever I created a group and tired to move it, only one of units is moving, this feature works in Ctp though.

Group commands don't work. Do not try to escort your alien artifacts or colony pods using groups UNLESS the units move at the same speed and the esort units don't have special abilites (e.g. mw). Even so, you still can't specify the order of movement, i.e. which unit will move first each turn, etc.
