NEW WEAPONS PLATFORMS

IMPORTANT-BE AWARE BEFORE READING THIS POST THAT I, COLONIAL GOVERNOR POTTINGER DO NOT AT PRESENT OWN A COPY OF ALPHA CENTAURI, ALTHOUGH I HAVE PLAYED THE 100 TURN DEMO. IF ANYTHING WRITEN BELOW CONTRADICTS ANYHTING IN THE FULL GAME THEN I APOLOGISE NOW

Alpha Centauri, undoubtebley one of the best grand strategy games to hit the shelves offers the player the goal of conquering a new planet with an array of devastating weapons. But the proposal that I am about to put forward would change all that, it would bring an new edge to the design, construction and deployment of weapons systems on Alpha Centauri.

Maybe I am the only one who thinks this but there just aren�t enough chassis, armour and weapons systems design�s to create the weapons needed for combat . My proposal therefore is for an add-on to the program.

As with the units in GT Interactive �Total Annihilation�, we the players should be able to design new faster, stronger and more devastating chassis, armour and weapons systems. The game is already taxing enough, we have to take into account the larger picture so that our strategies will succeed. But imagine the un-ending supply of weapons designs that would come about from the players own imaginations.

The Proposal would consist therefore of the following points: -
-Players can design their own weapons

-Players can design their own Chassis

-Players can design their own armour

-The limitation of the number of weapons per unit (Currently one main weapon and two special abilities) should be changed to allow more primary weapons e. g. Three instead of one

-Units should be able to inter-grate other unit capabilities into their own e. g. A cruiser with planet buster capabilities.

These proposals would however give the player a new and potentially unfair advantage. As with the new faction�s ideas they would need general approval from other players or as would be more suitable in this case a ruling body, which brings me on to my second proposal.

A global board of Alpha Centauri players who would assess the new design and decide weather or not they would be suitable, after which the name of the new vehicle design could be posted so that other players would know the unit had been approved.

I hope this post has given people a taste of a new possibility, I know that there will definitely be complaints about this proposal but if you are with me on this would I would appreciate your support in bringing this to the attention of whoever needs to see it.

Nice idea, problem is: what is there to design? I mean, you can't really have new armour types (we already have 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 - I think). Chassis can't get any different, *really*. OK, maybe you could have some sort of altered gravship or helicopter, but that's just nit-picking.

Don't know about number of weapons per unit. After all, if you have a missile launcher and a impact rifle, you're obviously going to use the missile launcher every time.

A cruiser with planet buster capabilities? How would that work? Wouldn't it end up blowing itself up? Anyhow, any unit with planet buster capabilities would be a little redundant since it'd take so long to build the damn thing you might as well just build a normal planet buster.

Sorry for being so critical, but I can't see any real need for this. What would be useful are entirely new categories of units, including space-based weapons platforms (as I and many others have proposed), turrets, etc.

The cruiser would have been a ship with missiles on board so that it would be able to move around more to avoid the NME.

The space based weapons sound like a good idea-I had a though for maybe submarines, are they available?

ships with "carrier deck" can transport missles. and yep, subs are available also. I would recommend you try the full version. The demo is only good to get a basic feeling for the game.

I wouldn't bother with subs, they aren't worth crap. They have no advantages except they're "invisible" but so are cloaked ships. The AI seems to find them right away too. They should be more like real subs, maybe if they win the first hit the target is destroyed automatically. This has all been said somewhere before.
Carriers are good though. Be sure to have a AAA Battleship escort it or it will most likely get sunk.
I think the existing weapons and chasses are fine, but we need more special weapons. Some people have suggested a missile carrying option that could be put on any unit, even needlejets (ALCM anyone?). Space weapons would be good too, but might give too much an advantage to people far ahead in tech.
