OK, I've been a good lad, maybe i needed to hammer the University a bit to get them outta my face, but I don't deserve this. Why is it, every so often, for no reason whatsoever (even when I give them gifts and support them against their foes) they just turn round and renounce my pact with them. The most common perpetrator of this action is Brother Lal, I plan to wipe him out as soon as my secret projects are built!

Look at Brother Lal's profile - he's erratic, so expect erraticism (word?).
Also look for some of the older threads here and currently at Apolyton's site re the 8th escape pod (the one you see exploding in the intro movie). Some speculation has it that the exploding one contained the real peace-loving/UN idealistic Lal, and that the actual Lal in the game is an evil underworld kingpin who smuggled himself aboard Unity and who has assumed Lal's identity, hence his lack of real UN principles.

I think it is because in their profile they are described as "erratic".

Because that is how the AI is programmed. Its a lying, two-faced hypocritical pig/she-dog...
They will ALL break pact with you IF they think they can get further ahead by doing so. Whether they surrendered or not...

How other faction leaders treat you is based on three factors: how your social engineering choices compare to theirs, your relations with other factions, and your proximity to them. If you have a social choice that is different from their agenda, a faction leader will never like you, though they may offer alliances against other factions. For instance, if you choose Democracy Yang and Miriam will never like you. As for relations with other factions, if you have a Treaty with one faction that another is in Vendetta with, that faction will not like it. Proximity is the old "your neighbours are your enemy" principle.
However, Lal seems to be a partial exception to this. In one recent game I chose democracy and was at war with all of Lal's enemies (by their choice), yet Lal hated me. His main reason seems to have been that I was the other most powerful faction. In other games where I have been Lal, no one has a problem with me being powerful. I suspect something went wrong when they were coding Lal's reactions, because a Peacekeeper should not be the game's biggest conqueror.

I think he doesn't want the competition for Governor or Supreme Leader. He considers himself the only legitimate power on Planet.

I am in the process of redesigning a full-screen, less sloppy version of Voxel Paint. Did anyone look at the screenshots or what?
After I get that functional, I'll work on the 'bubbly' 2d terrain, then I can link the two and we'll see what we can crank out.
