"Hasbro Strategy Games at E3
by James Fudge
Posted 05/13/1999

Hasbro Interactive's new lineup of MicroProse & Avalon Hill strategy
titles for 1999 were unveiled today at E3. Leading the pack are
Civilization II: Test of Time, and Diplomacy from the Avalon Hill line.

Civilization II: Test of Time, which is expected to debut this summer, is
a return to familiar ground for MicroProse. Test of Time features new
graphics and brand new worlds to explore and conquer. Three worlds are
featured in Test of Time The original Civilization II, the magical world of
Midgard, and the solar system of Lalande 21185. Players interact in
multiple dimensions through linked, layered worlds, and battle it out in the
tradition of the game series. The game features different modes of play
including Fantasy, Science Fiction and the refined Civilization II. As in
previous games, players can build societies based on the principles of
democracy or rule with an iron fist. Players compete against the game's
AI or up to seven other players.

Diplomacy is the first title from the popular Avalon Hill library since
Hasbro took the company over. In Diplomacy, the world's super powers
are held in a delicate balance of power in the early 1900's. World War is
on the horizon and any move could set off an explosive chain of events
that will change the face of history. Seven pre-World War I major
powers are featured in the game, including Austria, Hungary, England,
France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Turkey. Players must outwit their
opponents and make allies were necessary. Players interact with the
game's AI characters or negotiate with up to seven other players.,/p>

Risk II is the sequel to the popular game based on the even more popular
board game of the same name. The year is 1812. Napoleon's army is on
the march, and as the Supreme Commander players must seize territories,
crush enemies and betray allies in a quest for world domination. The game
has two modes: in the Classic Game under the familiar rules, players trade
virtual cards for armies and roll the dice to outdo their opponents. The
"Same-Time-Turn" option offers a whole new Risk experience that
includes I-COM communication and negotiation features, territory depth
enhancements and territory bidding. Risk II will march into stores this fall.

Axis & Allies: Iron Blitz is an expansion to the classic Axis & Allies
CD-ROM game. The game features two new units: a Marine and a
Destroyer. the game also features new editor and pre-set scenarios for
thousands of game situations. Now, icons will be country specific or
players can import custom graphics as game icons. Axis & Allies: Iron
Blitz will roll out in the Fall 1999.

Magic the Gathering:Gold Edition - based on the successful card
game, Magic the Gathering: Gold Edition includes all the cards and
features from the three Magic computer games. The game also comes
with over 140 new cards drawn from the card game's Legends and The
Dark expansion sets, and new features, such as sideboarding, to open up
new strategies in both single-player and multi-player games. Magic the
Gathering: Gold Edition will ship in the Fall 1999.

Finally, X-COM Alliance combines the popular strategy series with the
Unreal engine to produce an action-strategy game similar to Incubation.
X-COM Alliance features team-based management, the ability to control
four squad mates, camera views at the top of the screen to track and
command squads and various 3D enhancements afforded by the Unreal
engine. X-COM Alliance blasts off in Spring 2000.

I hereby predict that tomorrow's Hasbro/Firaxis announcement will have absolutely nothing to do with any of these titles.

I dunno, anyone else think that the number of powers (7) is a little ominous? Sid does like to stick to sever sided games after all (Colonization being the exception, though were there 7 Indian Nations by any chance?)...

I was intrigued to come across the references to Diplomacy in an SMAC forum. For those of you wondering what Diplomacy is: it's a board game (now often played by email) set in Europe in 1901, with (relatively) simple tactics yet complex strategy. It's simultaneous movement, which ups the potential gains for breaking agreements with other players, and .. oh, it can be fascinating. Visit the best Web site for the hobby at: http://devel.igo.org/DipPouch

Why intrigued? Because I've wondered ever since I came across MP games here what they will turn out to be. The two games are so different in many ways, yet IMHO MP SMAC has some similarities. 7 factions/powers. You can negotiate with other leaders and agree anything from full pact/alliance down to limited one move cooperation. From here I'm guessing a little about MP SMAC, but wouldn't it be possible, as in Diplomacy, to use strategies like spreading lies about the intentions of other factions, using feints against one opponent to disguise an attack against an erstwhile ally and so on? Of course, there are *huge* differences as well, perhaps the biggest being the ethos of the two games. A good Dip player can take a 'stab' (attack by ally) and renegiotiate in the new position. I suspect many SMAC players would just go crazy after revenge.

It'll be interesting to see what develops as MP SMAC gets played more often. Will there be long term alliances where no one stabs (a.k.a. Care Bears)? Will some faction (like Austria in Diplomacy) be most people's last choice? [that's enough speculation - Ed]

Anyone else here remember a chesslike game by Avalon Hill called "Feudal". That was e great boardgame and if you enjoy chess you would certainly like this game. I would like that game to get done someday, whenever.
