(As a extra, it would be nice to set the maximum number of cities that could be built too, but this isnt a real big deal and I could live without it.)

I'd like to see a terraforming command allowing the ability to build canals, because its pretty irritating to wait 30 game years for a ship to get from one side of your empires home continent to the other.

You can build canals. Have a sea former by the land, and a land former adjacent to it. Lower the land level until you get the sea there.
Try it, and do what the pop up menu tells you.

But that's not what a canal is. A canal is just a road filled with water, basically. And I don't want a square filled with water. I just want an artificial river that I can move ships through.

WolfDreamer- what if there were mountains running through with several terraformed enhancements already there then instead of simple making as urban ranger said "a road filled with water" you'd have to fool around with the terrain and screw up rainfall and any enhancements already in place. I think a canal option with it taking about 2 turns per height level per square would be easier.

I wonder if they ever thought of letting ships go up rivers... I suppose it might make them too powerful, but it sure would be convienent, and more realistic too.

How about foils can move up rivers, but cruisers can't?
