I've got a question to the developer of SMAC:
Will there be a Mission Pack, and will there be a Weapon Creator?

They already have one, its called the alpha.txt.

I have to concur that, right now, SMAC has lame weapons. There's no imagination to them. Just guns of various sizes. You don't get things like torpedos, cruise missiles, "shotguns" (weapons that damage many units a small amount), weather weapons, stasis field generators (freezes enemy units), and other sorts of good stuff.

We heard you the first time.... and the second. Someone should fix that repeat posting thing. It happened to me also today.

Anyway, I think what we need is a way to gas all the helpless undefended civilians to death, when they don't have any military units in the bases. I can attack and defeat a single military unit, and kill off half the population if I win, but if there are no more units left, then I have to wait until the base builds more before I can gas them again.

Call the patch "Genocide made easy" and add in extra features such as poisoning the water supply and killing off all the kelp farms, poisoning the river and killing off all life within a few squares of it, and of course the Roman style scourched earth policy of plowing the ground with salt so nothing can ever grow again so that if you can't have it, no one can.

Well, you have most of those things already. Artillery acts as a shotgun, damaging multiple units a small amount. Torpedos are realy just ships with missle launchers.. cruise missles I have to admit would be nice.
You can gas entire populations, just take the city with your unit then hit B I think it was to whip out the entire population.
More speical effect weapons would be nice. Things like scorched earth, the formentioned weather weapons (neucler winter generator?), ect ect.

Ugh!! I'm terribly sorry about the mutiple posts. Blasted script went off the dead end.

Torpedoes are for subs. In many games I played subs have a "first strike" ability to reflect their ability to sneak in undetected. If the first strike is successful, the other unit is killed without getting off a shot.

Right now artillery is a SA, not a weapon. And it's silly anyway. The funniest thing is, how do you use laser as artillery? Other illogical bits include wimpy weapons have the same range as nasty weapons. I wouldn't mind having a rail gun that can fire at another target 100 squares away.

I think that a Weapon Editor will be nice,
so you can make better weapons like the Singularity-Laser. (But you have to make a new tech). A Script Weapon Editor will be nice, too.

Urban Ranger, did you get inspired by MoM in your first post?

firaxis aborted a larval attempt to differentiate weapons, you still can read trace of them in alpha.txt (and in the manual I guess), it's the projectile/energy/binary thing, so I doubt they would go again in that direction.

I would like to see a program, which helps you editing the alpha.txt like acedit helps you with the faction files. This would be a very nice addition.

Btw, I think, there is a difference between particle and beam weapons and armors in the game, and the kind of weapon and armor used influences the fighting factors.

I wouldn't stick out my arm on the fire for this, but the strenght modifiers and their result are ther for you to be seen in the combat info display, and never armor/weapon types match come into play.
It had been tested long ago by very sound SMACers, I can't recall if it had been even answered by Firaxis, and the lines you read about armor/weapon types in the manual and in alpha.txt are just the remnants of an aborted attempt.
