So is the news of the FIRAXIS/HASBRO Global Trade pact true?

Are we about to see SMAC + *sound of saw, hammer, lick of paint* = Civ3 in a few months?

Did Firaxis lose the copyright of SMAC by the way?

Why what have you heard? I think if they had they wouldn't be making patches and doing an expansion pack.

could be that all this hoopla was for nothing?
maybe they don't have a particular game in the works. eg. Sid and Brian leave mp they form firaxis the guys at mp say good ridance we are better off without them. then firaxis gets tow homeruns out.then hasbro decides that these guys are geniouses and they want to buy them out. Sid and Brian decide that it is better to have an alliance. they do a partnership. firaxis retains control of their independence and they can recover what they lost when they left (civ and pirates)

The speculation of Pirates II, Civ III, or Diplomacy (See: Firaxis teams up with Hasbro)are each quite exciting as long as Firaxis is in the design role. Sid, Brian, et al. have proven an ability to make a good idea into a great game. I don't really care if the publishing is Hasbro, EA, or otherwise as long as Firaxis' games get the attention they deserve.

So, will we find out during E3? I hope so!

Why is Civ III necessary? It seems clear to me that while Civ II wasn't perfect it was hard to improve on the game without going in a different direction, i.e. SMAC. If a legitimate Civ III product were released (meaning a sequel to Civ II--not dramatically different or RTS or other nonsense), I'd buy it--but only as a way to reward Sid and Brian and their $$$ backers for doing good work. I doubt I would play the game very much.

I'll have to go back and see what this Pirates! thing was, because I'm not familiar with that.

Pirates Multiplayer, forever!!!

Lloyd:

Pirates! (And Pirates! Gold) Were another one of those Gettysburg-esque Sid Meier games where you take the role of an adventerous sailor. You sail around the Mediterranian, doing whatever contents you. You can side with a nation, be a pirate hunter, or be a pirate yourself. It seems like a simple idea but in actuality it's a great game. A multiplayer pirates would kick major arse

Some people could play the goody two-shoes Merchants, and evil folk like I could go sailing around in a fleet of Frigates and War Galleons, looking for an unsuspecting Sloop whose captain I shall send to a watery grave. Arr, har har!

Civ III, Schmiv III, I thought that's what SMAC was for? Unlike some folks, I like other types of games besides Civ-TBS, and the Pirates genre would happen to be one of them.

Last time Sid talked about future projects, he mentioned that it would be about 2 to 3 years before he did a Civ III. At least. Unless other things didn't pan out. He wanted to do something different, very different. I think Pirates MAY be it, but Microprose has a LOT of old titles that he said he would like to update. Railroad Tycoon (which has a recent sequel, so is out for the same as Civ III), Colonization (which seems like it would be very similar to Civ, so out), XCom (which has had a few sequels, and done poor overall), Master of Magic (which desperately needs an update to the Win98/NT world), Master of Orion I & II, Pirates (which seems to be a cult classic, like MOM)... what else am I missing?

I bet Firaxis/Hasbro does Diplomacy and either Master Of Magic II (which would seem similar to what they just did, so that might not be it) or Pirates II (which is what everyone is yelling for).
