How does this work properly? I target the square I want to hit using the 'long range fire' option then sit back and watch the square next to it get hit (if you're lucky). Most of the time you get the 'artillery bombardment failed' message, why? On one occasion the Gaians managed to hit several squares with one salvo against me wiping out several enchancements with a single ship - how can you do this?

Good questions Greyhawk and I am sure that someone will pass by soon to answer them, your thread though raises another question of mine. Why was this marked as read when I had never come into look at Greyhawk's astute question until now?

Greyhawk I havenever had this happen to me so I don't know what the problem is.

Greyhawk:
Artillery has a random % chance to hit the thing you are aiming at - hence the frequent "artillery bombardment failed" messages. Sometimes you get lucky and hit your target first time, but I've sometimes had to spend 10 turns shooting at a sensor before I finally managed to take it out. It's supposed to simulate the inability of "real life" artillery to hit targets with accuracy.

Each ship (or other bombarding unit) gets one chance per turn to make a bombardment against terrain enhancements (as opposed to bases, when the ship gets a chance to hit each unit currently in the base, one at a time). If the Gaians really did take several shots at you from one ship during one turn, then this is a bug in the game (which I've not seen, incidentally, so I can't really comment). Are you sure the Gaians didn't have several ships stacked on the same square? The AI does do this quite a lot, and it would seem to be one explanation.

I have seen what Greyhawk mentioned. Not just ships either. It's just a lone artillery piece firing multiple times a turn. I know this, because once I had run the drat thing down and killed it, there was only one unit. That happened multiple times.

Another related problem: when you bomb a square, if you have a unit there, it is the unit that should get hit, right? No. Computer players are so uncannily accurate with long range fire that they can avoid my covering units to destroy the enhancements they are trying to protect.

Nell: Yes, long range bombardment is not accurate, but if it doesn't hit the target, it should hit SOMETHING, not just vanishing into thin air.

BTW, why can battle ships with the really big guns bombard only as far as a cruiser with its Impact cannon? Isn't that idiotic?

The bigger the gun, the more far you should be able to fire with cruisers (and artillery). Perhaps you should than not be able to aim on nearer objects.

Furthermore, if you take out an artillery with a ground unit, it always seems as if there was only one as you destroy all ground units in one strike.

Air units have a 75% chance of destroying an enhancement. Artillery has a 50% chance, and missiles(!) have a 100% chance. I've never seen anyone use a missile to destroy an enhancement, however. Air attacks get to pick the enhancement destroyed. Artillery attacks destroy a random enhancement.
