Well, uhm,

at last I'd got around playing Alpha Centauri (v4.0, latest patch, german version) the intensive way (10 hours a day =). The problem, though, the game crashed today after approx. 8 hours of play.

There was a message that production on one of my bases had been successfully completed and that was just it. The game crashed, the cause of failure was in "sound.dll", as far as the task-manager of windows 98 told me.

By the way: My system-configuration is:

Pentium Pro 180, Tyan 1662 mainboard, 128MB EDO Ram, Soundblaster PCI128, Elsa Victory Erazor (Riva 128 chipset), that's about it, I think, at least what concerns the game and system. And last and least Windows 98.

By the way, the latest drivers for my hardware, as well as DirectX 6.1a (latest available update) have been installed.

Hey, I was just stomping Mr. Yang to the ground when this happend, please check this out, will ya?

By the way, sometimes the speech in the game will repeat continuously, sometimes quite distorted. Perhaps this is a problem in your sound routines (in combination with SB PCI 128)?

Bye Carsten

The same error occured once again, after replaying from the last auto save position.

This time I have captured some output:

Hope this helps,

bye.

PS: Perhaps this has something to do with overall playing time? I'm in the year 24xx...hell, before I could write it down, it crashed...

It sounds like the game is misdetecting your sound hardware. Try setting the EAX and DS3D entries in the alpha centauri.ini file to 0. If that doesn't work, rename the sound.dll to sound.dl_ to just make sure it's the sound systems problem and not something else.
