We just tried to play a 3-player game over the household LAN. We installed SMAC on an old P90 (that started as a Win 32.1 machine and was upgraded to Win95) and upgraded SMAC to ver 4. It worked fine, single player, but couldn't use DirectConnect. Running the DirectX install didn't make any difference.

Fwiw, the other non-host machine is a P100 w/ Win95 factory installed. The IPX worked first time. Maybe it already had DirectConnect, and the CD's DirectX installer doesn't install DirectConnect?
