I've been away from SMAC for awhile until the new patches were available and downloaded and installed them recently. I didn't have any trouble picking up where I left off in my saved games (whether they were updated or not, I really don't know, they didn't crash anymore though). But, when I started new games, I kept getting crashes less than 5 minutes into the game. I set up a custom game on talent level playing the Peacekeepers, and I get the dreaded Terran.exe fault from the v1.0 days of crashes.

Memory is not the issue. I rebooted a couple times and have over 80% free and 64M RAM (and the saved games played without a hitch for hours even without rebooting).

If the saved games hadn't worked I might think it was a hardware issue (after hours of playing, heat would be a factor), but it wasn't, and I completed two older saved games, telling me it is defintiely not hardware.

Please tell me I don't have to go looking for the latest drivers again. That would kill ANY hope I have of classifying this as a good game. With four patches, I would have hoped to eradicate the Terran.exe crash by now. If I need to reload anything besides the updates again, I'm chalking SMAC up as an unplayable (but well designed) game and overall as a bad game period; the frustration isn't worth the effort. I'll play CCTP until CivIII comes out.

Ok, after further testing with various factions and custom settings, the ONLY common factor in when the games crashes is when my last active unit gets killed by mindworms while scouting around. In each instance, I have built defensive units and colony pods and had them scouting and Holding in bases and building new bases. But EACH and EVERY time the last active unit was killed by worms from pods or fungus, at the end of that turn, the game crashed, without exception 14 times.

This is NOT a hardware issue; nor is it driver related. This is definitely a programming problem or glitch brought on by the v4 update (which coincidently had to be copied into my SMAC directory or I get a sound.dll error trying to unzip it).

Back to CCTP. It's not the true successor to Civ2, but at least it works.

If you have a save that duplicates the problem 100%, please send it to [email protected]. So far, the main causes of random fatals are non-intel processors over heating and exhausting virtual memory (typically on large or huge maps).

If it's the Non-intel CPU's, please explain to me why SMAC is the only game I have these problems with. I do believe that Alien VS predator and Quake 2 are "Heavy games" And they work 100% perfectly. Same goes for Dungeon keeper 2 and Baldur's Gate.

Maybe it's a software glitcxh afterall??????
