I eagerly downloaded the V4 upgrade, and installed it. SMAC then wouldn't start at all, rather it showed the Firaxis logo, the screen went black with an hourglass cursor, and then the cursor disappeared and the box just sat there. I have played SMAC since I got it the week it came out on the same machine:
AMD K6-233
96 MB EDO RAM
Diamond Viper 330
Sound Blaster Live! Value
6.3 GB total disk space
I even backed up files and reformatted the drive, tried different installations (I'd been using Full), ran it from the CD menu and from the desktop icon and the Start menu, and always get the same result. This is a real bummer, inasmuch as SMAC is, IMHO, the best damn computer game I have ever played.
Can you please try to shed some light on the subject? I'd really like to play with the new additions...

Hold the presses!
After posting, I read the messages form the last 45 days, and saw Firaxis' advice to switch to 256 colors before srating the game. I tried that, and the game ran A-OK.
I also tried 16-bit color, and that worked too.
