I didn't have my IPX connection configured properly. I put in the propper variables. Now when I try to start an IPX game the host can create a game but who ever is joining can't find the game. It doesn't matter what computer I use to host or join. I can send and access files to/from either computer through network neighborhood. I am only networking two PCs with coaxial cable (no hub). I double checked my IPX properties, the frame type and address are set to the recomended settings from the help file. Both PCs are running the 4.0 patch. Do I need a game CD in both PCs? Right now only one PC has a game disk but both have the complete install.

Thanks for your help,

PR

When I try to play a multiplayer game with two PCs on a IPX Lan
I get a Direct Play error. The error tells me that I haven't
installed direct x 5. I have direct x 6 installed and I don't have
any problems with other games. What gives?

Try using TCP/IP over the lan. For IPX, where does is generate
that message? When you're trying to join a game, or when you
select an IPX game?

You only need a CD in the host machine. Have you been able to play any other IPX games on this setup? Again, I recommend installing TCP/IP (if it's not already in there) and using that for MP SMAC.

Actually good buddy, I had the same problem. Turns out that Windows 98 (95 likely also) doesnt quite setup the ipx like it should. There are two things that need to be increased. To fix the problem (or at least what fixed this problem for me) it the following:

Click on the ipx/spx protocal and click on the property tab.

then click on the advanced button.

Change the Maxium Sockets and Maximum connections to a value of 16.

Here in lies the problem. Windows sets these to 1 (i believe) with allows to computer to establish connects and file transfers. If you try to play a game, all of the ipx connections between the computers are already taken and thus the error. Took me 5 days, but I finally figured it out. Hope this helps.
