I tried installing the patch and it causes the game to be completely silent except for the opening movie! I can't imagine what could be wrong, it worked fine before... I checked all the in game audio settings, they were all on. What can I do? Thanks in advance for your help.

What's the soundcard? On some the game misdetects their hardware acceleration capabilities, which can cause problems. Try setting the EAX and DS3D entries in the alpha centauri.ini file to 0.
