I've been trying to patch v1.0i to v3.0 and keep getting the following error message at around 67% on terran.exe:

PATCH ERROR Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match.

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling then patching. Reinstalling with all different install options (typical, full, etc..) then patching. I've scanned my system for the CIH virus. I've tried installing in the default directory and a directory I've made. I called EA support and they said "We don't know what the problem is but if we find out we'll let you know."

I'm thinking maybe I got a bad CD from the store. Is there any way to fix the problem or go about getting a new CD from you guys at Firaxis?

Any help at all with this would be great!!

Which file is it hanging on? If it's terran.exe, try uninstalling the game, deleting the folder, reinstalling AND apply the patch before running the game even once.

You said you were trying to patch 1.0 to 3.0. That may very well be your problem. Don't use Patch 1.0, just use patch 3.0. That may mean reinstalling the game from scratch. When I tried doing the same thing, I got the same error. Then I did a uninstall, reinstall, and added only P3, worked with no problem. I think that P3 is looking for an unmodified file to fix, but won't find it because it was modified with P1.

I've tried the uninstall, delete the folder, reinstall and patch without playing the game. Several times. With every different install option (full, typical, etc...). And yes it is terran.exe where the patch stops patching. Any other thoughts? Did I get a bad game from the store?

Warp Warrior:

I'm not using patch 1.0, v1.0i is the version that came in the box.

Chances are no. Are you using the correct version of the patch? If the game is in english, check the EA Technical Support helpfile. If it says UK, download and apply only the v3 UK patch. Otherwise, it's the US.

I have the US version and it's the US patch I'm using. I'm completely out of ideas here. Nothing I'm trying works. I know I'm not the only one out there with this problem, I've seen similar posts here and in the newsgroups but no one seems to know what the fix is. Is it a problem with v1.0i versus a different original version. Was there another version that shipped before v1.0i? Was terran.exe altered in some way for v1.0i and the patch is looking for the older shipped version? Is there a way to get just the v3.0 files without the patch installer so that I can just overwrite the needed files manually?

The only other instance of this not being solved was from burned CD backups, which usually modified the on-disk copy protection. Go ahead and send the terran.exe to me so I can see what happens here. [email protected].

Is the problem with v1.0i solved?
What is the solution?
I think there is also a problem with
alpha.txt.
My friend has v1.0i(but not the Internet
connection) so I ask.

What problem are you refering to? If it's hanging on the alpha.txt file, he may (a) have modified it. Copy the original back from the CD. (b) gotten the wrong version down. Make sure he's using the correct language patch for his version of the game.

The problem is that he cannot update to the v3.0 .He tried it with both UK and US patches -it doesnt work.I've seen that Jodymc had a same problem.

I'm at work, so I don't know off-hand the original version number of SMAC that I bought. However, I *did* have some problems loading up the v3.0 patch after I first installed the original game.

I solved it by copying the patch update file into SMAC's root directory and running the patch update from there. All the hang problems (on terran.exe) that had occured disappeared.

You may have already tried this and it may be that my original version number is not v1.0i. (I'll have to check once I get home from work). But, just in case it helps...
