Every time I try to open up a new game I get this weird error, this program has preformed an illigal operation and will be shut down, TERRAN.EXE THis really ticks me off because I have a crash guard too, What the heck is going on! I can play it without the patch just fine...

What's the error? Try setting EAX and DS3D to 0 in the alpha centauri.ini file. It sounds like it might be misdetecting your soundcard.

This error appears when I click on teran.exe to start the game. I changed the two settings that you mentioned and got this (the same, I think)error message. I used the 3.0 patch. Any help out there?

Sounds like a slightly different problem Ted. What's your hardware specs? Does this problem occur with all versions? I'd start by downloading and installing DX 6.1 from www.microsoft.com/directx.

Jeff,
Here is what information I have about my computer. The game worked when I first got it but then it stopped. I've tried to reinstall from the cd and to use the patch and I always get the problem w/ terran.exe. Also, I have installed DX6.1 but I wouldn't know if it's working or not.

Try renaming the sound.dll to sound.dl_ to determine if the soundcard is the problem. If not, try a few of the tweaks listed in the readme.txt file. Directdraw=0 might be a good one. Try also running DXDiag.exe and seeing what it thinks. Do you have a few hundred megs free on your c: drive?

Jeff-
Here is my alphacentari.ini. Since the game worked when I first got it and then suddenly stopped, i wondered if my .ini file might of gotten messed up. Is such a thing possible? And if so, if I erased the file, would reinstalling the game give me a default .ini file to use? It seems very strange that the game would work for a while and the stop. It now won't work straight from the cd nor with the 3.0 patch. Any insight anyone could give me would be appreciated.

Jeff,
I tried renaming sound.dll and got this error. I have 326 megs of free room on my C:\ drive. I didn't see anything in the readme about setting Directdraw=0. Where would I do that? I know that I am bombarding you with a lot of information, but I really want to get back to playing the game. Thanks for your patience.

About the ini file, yes, if you delete the game and reinstall it will restore those settings. You have just enough free HD space for larger maps. I'd defrag the drive completely to make sure it's all available for the swapfile.

That seems to have worked. I got the starting movie at least. How much harddisk space would I need to use a large map? Thanks foryour help!
