I have k6-233(not overclocked),matrox mystique pci(4m),64m (ram) and windows 98.
I usually used 1152*864 and 16bit color.(i have 17inch monitor)
Whenever I played the smac,it always crashed.
but 1024*768 is OK.
How can I solve this problem?
Please help me.

Your English is ok, but I think Firaxis, or other posters, might need a bit more information.
How does it crash ?
What does it look like when it crashes ?
Is there an error message shown ?
When does it crash ?
What version of the game are you using ?
Do you mean it doesn't crash when you set the screen to 1024*768 ?

Well, 1024x768x8bit is the highest the game will run at. It sounds like ot might have trouble switching resolutions. A simple solution is to just manually switch your desktop to 1024x768 prior to play. A more involved one would probably start with running DXDiag.exe and looking for driver problems noted in the lower sections of the window.
