When starting SMAC (sometimes) when the initial Firaxis splash screen is displayed or even the video starts, pressing a key or mouse button, the screen turns black. Win 95 is still operational (can do a alt/F4) to reboot, but cannot return or close down without rebooting.

I'd investigate you're videocard's directx capability with DXDiag.exe. Run the assorted DirectDraw tests, as well as look for uncertified video/sound drivers. If worst comes to worst, and you're using v3.0, set disableopeningmovie to 1 in the alpha centuari.ini file.
