For the couple of weeks I have been trying to play a multiplayer game of Alpha Centauri without success. I havent found one person who has successfully played a game on Alpha.net without the damn thing locking up. IP games seem to go a bit better, but eventually end up with problems even between players with cable and ISDN modems! On a LAN system, the game runs into problems and is prone to lockups. BTW, everyone that I have played with have the 3.0 enhancement, a Pentium 2 - 300+ CPU, and over 64 ram memory.

Is anyone else having a similar experience? This is a major disappointment for me as AC would be a blast to play over the net.

I play SMAC (german version) with a friend to jear 2350 without any problems (simultan moves). The only thingis, that the host get his terraforming callbacks and then get this all his clients (this is expenstive in time)..

Yes. Multiplayer happens all the time. Check out the Multiplayer forum and see!

I agree with you that AlfNet is a pain. I tried it twice and determined that is valuable only as a place to organize IP games or to pickup another player or two. And then I suggest closing AlfNet after you start the game, as it seems to lead to crashes even if you don't use it to launch SMAC.

There can be difficulties with IP games, but these are usually due to poor connection quality. Another significant problem are dropped ISP connections. But if all players agree to meet again at AlfNet or on ICQ prior to a failure, it is usually not that big a deal.

Also, don't give up when you get the error pop-ups. Keep retrying for a while. I've played many a game where you just had to "ride out" the errors.

The problem I had most was that the game freezes when calling council or when a human player was dropped, lost connection or big lag.
Alf.HQ sometimes makes problems as the routing breaks or the HQ server.
Other problems I didn't had.
I'm wondering when Alpha HQ will be finish beta at least.
