When my units are off to attack an enemy baser or unit, some weapons attack with an explosion, rather than a little whirring thing (a great description). Whilst the little whirring thing destroys a unit, the explosion hardly hurts it. My units seem to decide whether they will use an explosion or whirring thing randomly. How do I stop the explosions and just use the whirring thingy?

Thanks

Whirl - Psi attack
Explosion - Regular attack

Only units with the 'Psi' weapon, or Alpha Centauri native life use the Psi attack by default.

Actually there may be a different explaination. If the explosion looks like a mushroom cloud, it's an artillery unit. They bombard only. The whirring thing is a psionic attack. There also might be regular battles where there is a small "burst" on the enemy.

I posted something about the little explosions in the Game section, but nobody paid any attention to me. The way you can tell what kind of explosions you're going to get is to check the weapons (Offense) of the party being hit.

For example, if my shard infantry attacks a silksteel garrison, the explosions on the garrison will be an orange cloud-type (since a garrison has only hand-weapons), but the explosions on the shard infantry will be a red cloud-type (since they have shard weapons).

I don't remember all of them, but you could probably look them up. I think impact cannon is a blue burst-type, etc...

Of course, this is a bug IMHO, since the explosion type should be determined by the power of the weapon used to beat on the defender, not the power of the weapon the defender happens to be using.

But nobody ever listens to me anyway...

So, is there any way of me being able to tell a unit to attack with a regular attack or psionic attack and not bombard?

A psi unit is either a mind worms (or their bretheren) or a unit you equip with either psi attack or psi defence. The two I just listed don't come until the late game. An artillery unit has its attack value in parentheses (all ships have this).
