I believe I've found a work around for the sound issue those of us with Awe32s and SB32s have been experiencing. I'm referring to stuttery sound, and the DirectSound problem with the movies.
I had a look at the Creative Labs site to clarify what my card is. This was quite useful because it clued me in on how to fix things. Basically the SB and AWE32s are Sound Blaster 16s with AWE32 chips. I remembered the Firaxis bloke saying his SB16 was fine. So I thought, what if I can remove the AWE32 element from my SB32, making it basically just a SB16?
Now, because these cards are effectively two stuck together, if you have a look at your device manager under Control Panel/System you'll see that you have 2 components to the card. Remove the AWE32 one. Now start up Alpha Centauri with sound and see what happens. You may also want to run the DirectX Diagnosis thing - it'll complain about not having stereo or something, but doesn't generate that step 10 error thingy. You should make sure the SB16 driver is cerified, as it is on mine now - perhaps try an older version which is. Anyway, hope that was all reasonably clear and if it works for you like it did for me the movies and in-game sound should be fine. Oh, and ini strings are at 0 still.

Cool hint on the solution to the problem!

I tried it out.
I disabled the AWE32 component and afterwards I started the DirectX diagnose program to see if the Step 10 error was resolved. Well, it was gone and I started the game.
Tried a saved game where I was just finishing another secret project and bought it. Turned the movies back on and saved the game for easier retry...... Well, the movie worked out and I reloaded it. The movie worked again. To make sure I tried it a third time and the movie worked again! Normally it would have crashed never later than try two.

Thanks Pal, you made it possible for me to play the full game again :-)

Would you please tell me how to get hold of old, certified drivers for SB's?
