I'm playing the UK version. When I installed patch 2.0 I started having trouble with the sound. This appeared to be random: sometimes I'd get the sound effects, sometimes I wouldn't. I've d/loaded and installed patch 3.0, hoping it would fix things, but it didn't -- in fact, I haven't heard the sound effects at all since I've installed it.
The nice man from Firaxis keeps telling us to change the 2 lines in the .ini file: I've done that long ago, but it still doesn't work. I've also tried other suggestions that appeared in this forum (from other posters), but they didn't help either. My sound card is a SB Awe. Sound works fine everywhere else -- also in the SMAC movies. Any other suggestions to get my sound effects back? They were quite nice!

(Also, since installing patch 3.0 I've had the TERRAN.EXE crash that other people have been mentioning. And I've got plenty swap space (300 MB), and 64MB RAM. I'll keep checking this forum about this one -- but please tell me something about the sound, since the advice given up to now doesn't work!)

Thanks in advance,
Anna

Anna, I had the same problem with the US V3 patch, the battle sound effects and background music were muffled. I posted this to the forum and Jeffrey from Firaxis suggested I change the 2 lines of the file. This got the explosions back, but I never have recovered the background music. I miss it to be honest, it added to the sci-fi "mood" of the game.

I hope they clean up these sound problems once and for all in patch 4 (or SMACX).

Well, my sounds aren't just muffled, they're gone! Anyway -- I'm trying to see if Firaxis have any further ideas beyond changing those lines. Guess otherwise we'll wait for the next patch!

Ciao,
Anna

Run DXDiag.exe and run the directsound test and see what happens. Also, let me know what the sb drivers are in the driver pane and what DX drivers are installed. You can email that info to me by selecting save info from the program and send to [email protected]. Please summarize your problem.
