I tried to use the ACEdit at shttp://www.sidgames.com/acedit and it failed. Could this be related to that I hav V3.0 of SMAC????

Not that Firaxis supports ACEdit in any way, shape, or form .... but:

What trouble, in particular were you experiencing? Note that there is a bit of a snag with using ACEdit when entering longer lines of text (for the faction blurb, treaty and truce messages, longer reply strings) - namely, that SMAC does not seem to like long text lines in faction files. The solution is to open your faction file with a text editor and adding in line breaks so that individual lines are relatively short (~70 characters, though this is a very conservative rule). Not doing this will cause crashes in terran.exe when you try to use the custom faction file.

Also, note that you will lost custom graphics on re-loads of games. This should be fixed in the next patch, as Firaxis knows about this problem.

If either of the above issues do not match the "failure" you encountered, could you repost what specifically went wrong - I'm curious as to other possible shortcomings with ACEdit, as I am certain ANX (its maintainer) is.

I'm having a similar probem:

I just downloaded acedit, and I am having a problem opening it. I unzipped it, but when
I click on it, I get an error starting program message-- "A required .DLL file,
MSVBVM50.DLL, was not found". What do I do?

Someone suggested to me that I can find this .dll file in the windows/system directory if I click on "show all files", but it isn't there. I get the impression this is a video file or something, and I see no reason why I shouldn't have it.

Acutally I believe that is a Visual Basic library runtime thingiemagier.. =] ..You actually should be able to look around on the net and download it somewhere..

You can find the VB runtime files needed to get the program running right on their download page. Here's the address....

I also cannot get ACEdit to work on my machine, even after upgrading to 1.5 and proper VB version. Also the VB version that was for download and the one that came with Win98 which is on my 'puter are supposedly the same version but are different sizes. I have tried both libraries, both giving me an Error 7 - Out of Memory. I should have enough conventional memory, though you shouldn't have to worry about that in Winblows, and I have 64 megs of RAM which should be more than enough. Do I have some other outdated library that could be screwing this up, (which has happened before when I had Win95)?
