Every time I try to run a scenario I get the following error:

TERRAN caused a stack fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0217:bff857da.

Soyo motherboard 64 megs
PentII 266
Awe64 (latest drivers)
Velocity 4400
Latest DirectX6.1 drivers(Dxdiag.exe shows no problems, but the display driver, v128iid.drv is not certified by Microsoft.)

I have reinstalled Win95 ver. B, I can see the intro video, I can select a scenario, but when the scenario tries to start the game, I ALWAYS get the above error. Can you PLEASE advise me how to get the game going? I have never had any problems running any other game. Thank you in advance for any ideas you can give me.

I'd start by downloading and installing DX 6.1 from www.microsoft.com/directx. The Kernal32.dll error almost always relates to drivers or other system devices. If that doesn't solve the problem, run DXDiag.exe and see what it thinks of your system. Does this only occur with scenarios? Can you start a new game? Also, what version of the game are you using (FR/GR/US/UK)?

Thank you for checking out my previous message I have the US version (I live in USA). The game crashes even if I start a random game. I make a random game, I hear a narrator talk about the civilization I select, When I start the game "moduale" the game crashes with the same error. I have already installed the latest DirectX 6.1 from the microsoft web site. DXDIAG.EXE shows everything ok with the sound and directx 6.1 drivers. And passed all sound tests and display tests, except v128iid.drv is not microsoft certified.

I read many of the other messages posted here and tonight tried to run the game after renaming the sound.dll file to something else. AT LAST!, the game does work, BUT I play with NO SOUND during the main game. Your previous message hinted that "the Kernal32.dll error always relates to drivers or other system devices." Maybe my AWE64 sound card? Just curious, why should Alpha Centauri not work with my AWE64 (ISA card not PCI)? . . . . . Thanks for any other advice or hints you can give me

It may be misdetecting the card as EAX compatible. Try setting the EAX and DS3D entries to 0 in the alpha centauri.ini file.

Thank you for replying to my previous message. I set EAX=0 and DS3d=0 in the AlphaCentauri.ini file:

[Alpha Centauri]
EAX=0
DS3D=0
MainFontSize=16
InterludeFontSize=16
Prefs Format=11
etc . . .

The game still crashed with the same Terran, Kernel32.dll file error. It crashed whether, I started a scenario, new game, or a load of a saved game. When I changed the name of the sound.dll file to something else, then the game worked again. (Videos play correctly with sound, but no sound during the main game.) Did I put the EAX=0 and DS3D=0 in the correct place in the ini file? Is there anything else I can do to get sound in the main game? Prevent the crash? Thanks alot for everything.

Try this...

RE-name the sound.dll filews so you can get into a new game. Under the audio/video preferences completely turn off voice (by clicking on it to un-highlight it). that fixed alot of my crashing problems, but mine weren't has serious as yours.

Hope it helps

Mental, thanks for your suggestion. I tried it and this time I got the following error:

Terran caused an invalid page fault in module TERRAN.EXE at 0217:0061b1f5 etc. . . .

I am willing to try other possiblities

this is a rough one,

format your hardisk were you've installed windows with the format c:/s/u command, use fdisk/mbr to make a new bootrecord. Reinstall "i crash all the time" Windows '95 or '98 or NT 4 (SP 4 or higher).

This should clear your system registry. Reinstall all drivers and AC try it then. If it works great... problem solved, if not try reinstalling windows with only a videocard installed (remove all other cards from your computer).

Well, Juggler, that looks like something to try on a weekend. This terran.exe/kernel32.dll crash occured on my original hard drive (Maxtor 7.0, with 2 gig partitions). I put in a new hard drive (Maxtor 17.x gig, with 2 gig partitions) as the master drive, partitioned and reinstalled (crash all the time) Win95 OSR B, latest Directx6.1 drivers from Microsoft, Awe64, Velocity 4400 with drivers, etc. AND same kind of crash. BUT I have not installed everything again with ONLY the Video card like you suggested. I am thinking about putting my Millenium II card back in to find out if the video card will make a difference. I can play AC with the sound.dll named to something different. This is the strangest thing I have ever come across so far . . . Thanks for you suggestions, Juggler. I will try things this weekend . . .

Do you use fat32 or fat16? I myself use fat 32 and love it. I myself have 2 partitions of 3,5 gb and one swapdrive of 350 mb.Maybe you should cut back on the number of partitions.

You could also try lowering your memory timings.

Succes and please tell me if it helps.

I myself have crashed late in the game about gameyear 2400. Have moved my swapfile to c with 2gb of free space windowsmanaged, and still they occur every now and then. But it plays fine for the first 200 a 300 turns.
