My games just breaks out to Winblowz (98) irregularly and I have to start it up again, no blue screen or nothing just BANG and I have the desktop in front of me with the HD smattering to reduce the swap file size...

I run the game in 1024x768, 16-bit and usually on a Huge map (tried reducing resolution to 800x600 but problems still persist).

P-II 450, 256 Mb RAM, Asus V3400TNT AGP, 3+ Gb free on C: drive, SB 16 w. WaveBlaster II add-on card (ok, all parts of the comp. are 3 months old but the soundcard is 10 years, so what?!

As for everyone else my SB 16 drivers aren't DX validated. (INI changes have been made and I turned down acceleration in the control panel/multimedia - that seemed to make the game last a little bit longer before crashing).

If sound is the problem running with sound disabled just isn't a viable option, so please check in to this SB 16 bug if that's what I too am suffering from. How's the SB Live! ? I have planned buying one and I might speed up those plans if it will solve my problems definitly.

Thankful for any hints on what might solve my problem. SMAC does rule apart from this minor glitch ("GLITCH?! You call THIS a GLITCH?! Dick, I'm very dissappointed..." - RoboCop). But it's damned frustrating to restart it and load last autosave all the time...

I have had this same problem too It would usually happen right before the videos play when you complete a secret project. YOu would wait a few seconds for the video to load and wham your right back to your desktop. I had sometimes played almoth 4 hours without saving. It really sux...

Well, unless you've disabled autosaves (not recommended for multiple reasons), all you need to do is load autosave1.sav to pick up where you left off. Well, I'd determine whether or not the sound is the problem by running with sound.dll renamed and see if you don't drop. I'm not certain why many people's SB16s aren't certified since I've got one at home in my system and it's been certified since DX 3.0. I'll see what the driver version and date is on that system.

I have played a little with the soundcard settings under Windows, it seems that the game crashes more frequently when I have full acceleration on (default), so reducing that definitly does seem to make a difference. Now it's less than once an hour (before that it was like every ten to twenty minutes), so it's much more enjoyable to play now.

Have you had any similar soundcard problems with the SB Live?
