after reading all the reviews i decided to get smac and while i like the game i have been having heaps of problems with it,

game is australalian/us version

i am still on my first game playing gaia about year 2400 something
games was started before i applied the 3 enhancement
and problems started quite a while back.

the game ran for the first hour or two fine then started to play up. same with yesterdaty and same with today,

once the first crash happens they happen more frequently.

firstly im running the enhancement 3, never had 2.
3 had already come out by the time i bough the game saturday 3 of april.

problems are

1. sound and game lock up with the sound going "bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrttttttt" for what of a better description. usually have to do a reboot at this stage, sometimes through win98 (sound continues until computer reboots) and sometimes i have to push the external reboot button on the computer (sound continues until computer reboots)

2. blue screen of death with "the application cuased a fatal error in"
sorry i havent written down what it says. sometimes pushing any key solves the problem and sometimes i get kicked back to desktop.

3, tonight while playing nortons crashguard has activated 3 times
last i check details and it stated "terran.exe caused fault #0000005 in terran.exe at address 0177:001638a3.

things i have tried are

1. changed eax=0 in ini file, also ds3d=0 and combinations of both
doesnt seem to makeany differenc

2. dropped the performance tab in the the multimedia properties in control panal again doesnt make any difference

im playing in 800 x 600 or whatever the default is - which is another question of mine, how the hell to you change resolution in this game , i cant find a setting for rez anywhere, certainly not in the audio/visual tab of game from the menu.

any suggestions here would help especially has i payd $90 australian
for a buggy game that i cant return - thanks to australia's strange returns policy by shops.

my system is a

cel300a o/c to 464 (never had a problem with it in any other game or software)
abit bh6 motherboard
128 ram plus 256m of fixed virtual memory on second 2 g hardrive
riva tnt agp card running lastest hercules drivers
voodoo 2 card
aztech pci388 soundcard running the lasted aureal a3d drivers
pioneer 32 spin slotin cd rom.
8,4g w/d h/d and w/d 2g h/d

typical installation of the game

Well, first off, try renaming your sound.dll file, so it will totally disable sound in SMAC...See if that is causing your fatal exceptions. Also, SMAC will take the resolution of Windows...So you would change the res of Windows and SMAC will use it. =] Hope that will help you get to the root of hte problems..Good luck...(It is a good game, don't get discouraged!@) heh..

Have you tried running at 300mhz instead of 464? Some programs don't like o/c'ed cpus. I tried to install Baldur's Gate and it refused to install. I tried many things, but going slower was the best solution.

Also let Windows manage your memory and see what happens. I do get a stuttering of sound now with ver 3.0. I just save, quit and restart if I'm quick enough.

You say you have the latest Aureal drivers. Did you get these from Aureal or are they new Aztech drivers? If you are using reference drivers (Aureal) try going back to the Aztech drivers.
Try going back to the old Aztech drivers.
