I've tried several times to start a multiplayer game, both with IPX and TCP/IP, and nothing seems to work. All I get is "game not found" no matter who hosts or joins. We are all using the 2.0 patch on WIN98. I've had no problems setting up and playing Civ2gold multiplayer on this same network. Can someone tell me step-by-step how they initialize their SMAC multiplayer games? I feel stupid because no one else seems to be having this problem, so please help enlighten me. All you people who can start multiplayer are doing something I can't figure out, so tell me how you are doing it. Jetgirl.

Here's how I do it.Launch SMAC. Select "Multiplayer" from the main menu. Select TCP/IP. Select Host. Input a game name ("Filthy Hippies Unite!") Give out my IP number and wait for everyone else to join. |

Is that for internet games or network games? We want to set up a multiplayer game on a LAN. Should we use a special configuration in Windows network properties (like you're supposed to in Starcraft)? We have no problems file and printer sharing, so our network works fine... except no one can join any hosts games. We just get the "game not found" message. Typing in the IP address doesn't help, and sometimes it tries to dial up to the internet when we try.Help! |

If you want to try to get an IPX game going you might have to go to your Windows Control Panel and run the Networks Applet.Look under the Configuration property page. If you want to play over a LAN with the IPX/SPX protocol, then you will need to have that protocol installed in your network configuration. If you do not see it there, click on "Add", then "Protocol", then "Add" and try selecting Microsoft's IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol. If you are running on a Novell LAN, you can try the Novell IPX protocol. I would think these would already be configured for you, but you never now. Similarly, if you are trying to do TCP/IP, all of your computers might not have that protocol installed. Hope this helps and good luck. SMAC n ... Ted S. |

And IPX is better anyway..Slightly faster from what I hear..Also on your TCP/IP conections to your LAN, is your network card using a non-broadcastable IP? (90.0.0.*) But yeah, stick with IPX anyway.. =] |

Thanks for your suggestions, but that's what we've been trying these last couple of weeks. The IPX and TCP/IP connections/properties are set up fine (well enough to play Civilization multiplayer)... but SMAC just doesn't seem to want to work the same way. No matter what connection type we use (IPX or TCP, and no matter what configuration we try in network properties, we still get the "game not found" message. What I want to know is did anyone else have troubles setting up their SMAC networks, and how did they fix it?Thanks, Mandy |

I had the exact same problem. When I updated to 3.0 patch it went away. No one ever responded to the same question i asked weeks ago. Get 3.0 and you should be ok. |
