every time i try to start a game the machine crashes during the pod landing sequence. As you can understand this makes it kinda hard to actually play the game.
I'm running it on a AMD K6-2 333MHz with lashing of Ram and hard disk space and all my drivers are uptodate and have passed the DXdiag test.
I'm using the US version with the third gen patch.

in short

HELP

I had the exact same problem. I e-mailed EA about the problem. I ran the dxdiag and everything seemed great. However, when I sent over a copy to EA, they told me that despite installing DX6.0 my computer was actually using DX1.0 GASP!!! Neither the DX install program, DXsetup, nor DXdiag alerted me to the problem (I am far from an expert on DX) and all drivers were certified. Upon forcing DX6.1 to load in the computer, the game worked fine. How old is your video card?? Are you absolutely sure you have DX6.x installed?? Are all your drivers DX6.x certified??? EA can probably help you (www.ea.com/techsupp). Be sure to attach your DXdaig.txt to your e-mail and expect a 2-3 day wait between EA replies. Good Luck!!!

Got the game working, don't know how. But here's what i did:-

I was installing Linux as a secondary OS so i had to resize my harddisk (well part of it anyway) so i deleted the game the from my Hd, That is i didn't uninstall it i just went to the drive folder and banished the game files to oblivion.

I then spent many hours screaming and shouting at the horror that is Linux installation, it makes Win95 look like fun.

Then i reinstalled the game and copied the uk v3 patch to my machine (i was trying to get the game running using the US terran.exe file when i started this discusion) and before i installed the patch i decided to show a friend how the game works on my Mum's Cyrix pc and then show him how it failed to work on my PC, except the bloody program goes and works first time on both machines. Since then i've installed the UK v3 patch and have been playing away (okay getting clobbered by the God botherers) with on problems.

As far as i can tell all i did was, install the game (full install) on a partitioned hard disk, delete the game when the hard disk was to be repartitioned (leaving Win95 to fester in C drive) then reintall the game (Standard install i think) in the same drive letter partition and then play the blasted thing at last. Also i've no intention of deleting the game to find out if this will work a second time in case it won't.

And i'd like to say so far it seems much more fun than Civ:Call to power but i've only tried that once and i started out in what seemed like the mississipi(!?) swamps with hostile powers on all sides so i was pretty buggered.

Good work (well sorta) guys it's (finally) a great game
