The game works fine at 800x600, but if I switch to 1024x768, I get a blank screen. The light on my monitor blinks as if it's getting no signal or an invalid synch rate.

I have a PII-450 with 128MB of RAM, plenty of drive space (probably 2GB free), an AWE64G, Diamond Stealth G2-460 w/16MB, a Monster 3D2 Voodoo2 w/12MB, etc. No other games exhibit any problems, and I have *plenty* (I run at 1024 with Q2, HL, EAW, NFS3, Hive, BZ, etc. etc.).

I tried this both by just starting the game while in 1024x768, and by adding the "Video Mode=1024" line in the INI file.

Any ideas? I saw something about a "DirectDraw=0" setting for the INI. What problem does that address? Any other ideas?

It does sound like a refresh problem.. Do the other games you play use DD, or OpenGL or something? Maybe if they didn't use DD, and it could be that windows is setting a invalid refresh for your monitor, and it's just cutting down there..Maybe try turning DD off in the iNI file and see if that helps.

DirectDraw=0 fixed the problem.

I think I recall reading that D3D doesn't support 1024x768... although I thought that was v5 and not v6.

Oh well. Fixed now. Kind of a stupid bug, though, don't you think? I mean, I've got thosuands of dollars of super-primo hardware and yet... ah, nevermind.

Really? Acutally I didn't know 1024 wasn't supported...That is kinda silly, as more and more gamers want that kind of resolution (Including me) You would think Microsoft would of programmed for it...Oh well, maybe DirectX version 267..

You have to think about how fast hardware is changing, though. Even gaming at 640x480 was only barely realistic 18 months ago on the average guy's home system. D3D has had support for up to 800x600 ever since v3, which was... what, 96? So back then it was ahead of the curve by a long shot.

These days I'm sure it isn't getting the attention it deserves since MS is gung-ho into this Fahrenheit thing with SGI. But that's a GOOD thing... we'll end up with real OpenGL with real totally standard hardware specs for true GL acceleration, etc. etc.

I know several SGI people personally, and constantly hear about the cool stuff happening in the Fahrenheit group.

I guess what disappoints me is that if SMAC supports 1024, why isn't it smart enough to not try to use D3D if D3D doesn't support 1024? Oh well. Works now, right? Amazing how much less I care once it starts working on MY box. (A pleasure I don't get to indulge in when it's my own code that's broken.)
