The README file says there are problems using sound under Windows NT. There is a lot of stuttering. Are these problems fixed yet? If so, how?

They are not fixed. It is a DirectX issue that Microsoft must provide the fix for - either in a special release of DirectX for NT, SP5, or Win2000. The good news is that everything else works fine under NT. |

This is a real shame. SMAC is such an excellent game that it's a bummer, to say the least, that is has to be played without sound, because the Stu-stu-tering-ing is REALLY annoying. Can't FireAxis provide NT users with some better sound drivers? |

Firaxis is not into third party support for Microsoft. Microsoft developed DirectX, but has done their normal less than complete job. I suppose it's better than the "good old days" when the pat response was to contact your hardware vendor. |

My employer is a VERY large Microsoft client - and I have sent up a complaint about DirectX under NT through the chain of command. Since we are one of the early deployment sites for Win2000, Microsoft listens slightly better to us than most of its customers. No guarantee, mind you - but I have made them aware of the problem. DirectX has its CAD applications as well - and we are one of the largest CAD users in the world. So getting it up to speed under NT should become a bigger priority to the boys in Redmond. |

FWIW; This issue is completely fixed in Win2000. None of the NT5/W2K betas I've tried (including beta1) have yielded the stuttering sound that I experience under NT4 on my machine.AFAIK, a fix to this in NT4 would require some tweaking of the kernel, and MS won't do that, not in a Service Pack. The good news however is that the Win2K betas are stable. Once you've installed it and your favourite apps, it should be smooth sailing. -- Rune |
