I played the game with no patches and never crashed. I played it with the 2.0 patch and never crashed. I played it with the 3.0 patch twice and crashed twice.
Both times I played for about 20 minutes with no problem then the first time Miriam attacked me I got a 'Terran - Illeagal operation'. I played again and this time when a sea former investigaed a pod I got the same error. Opening up the Terran illegal operation gave me the following 'page fault in module sound.dll'
Now before anyone says something is wrong with my system, remember I NEVER crashed with no patch or the 2.0 patch and I played for hours and hours.
And also nothing has changed in my system between the 2.0 and 3.0 patch (or maybe I should say that the only thing that changed was putting in this patch. I've added no new hardware or software.
I like the 3.0 because it eliminated a lot of the bugs. Now it looks like a choice between bugs and no crash or no bugs but crashes.
Anybody else having this problem or know how to fix it?

Did you start a game fresh or continue a version 2 game?

Rename sound.dll and see if it repeats, if not then there's a problem with the audio.

Dick's suggestions are good ones.

Also, have you tried setting "ds3d=0" and "eax=0" in your Alpha Centauri.INI file?

We'll look into the problem; meanwhile you may want to revert to 2.0 or play without Sound (by renaming SOUND.DLL)

Just as a follow up...
I deleted Alpha Centauri, then reinstalled it. I then put on the 3.0 patch and played the game for a little over an hour with no problem. So hopefully the problem was maybe something with having a 2.0 patch and putting the 3.0 over it..?? I don't know but it does look like it is working now. I'll let you know if it crashes again.

Please send me a link to the 3.0 patch!

Oh well, so much for that idea, I still crashed.
Even though it never crashed with no patch and the first patch I guess this is somehow my fault. Or at least that seems to be the responce you get if you have problems.

Can't wait till the end of the month when the new Civilization comes out.

I have also had the terran.exe illegal operation error occur with v3.0, but never with v2.0.
Once with a v2.0 saved game and once with a v3.0 saved game.
The illegal operation caused me to close the program and return the desktop, naturally. I then restarted the game, loaded my latest saved game and continued play. No Biggie.
Both illegal operations occurred with Windows Explorer open in the background, after a game save and while I was away from the computer.
