posted 03-17-99 10:45 PM ET In one of the other threads someone mentioned that the early K6-2's ran a little hot. I decided to check it out with my system. With no cover on the case set a fan to blow air over the entire motherboard. Well before last night the best run I had at SMAC was 73 turns before a crash, and usually between 3 and 10 turns. Last night with the fan moving the extra air over the MB I played over 350 turns with only 1 lockup and no crashes. System: AMD K6-2: 233, not oc'd 48mg ram 8.4gb HD 16mg Banshee Video
Can't say if this will work for those of you who have the AMD chip and are haveing a lot of crashes, but it is something to check out.

I have 2 machines both equiped with AMD-k6-2 300s, though they are later versions and I have no problems running SMAC on either. A cheap and good fan for cooling ( I have it on my main machine ) is this nice little Blower fan from Radio Shack. Cost $10.00. Puts out high velocity direct air current. Only catch hard to mount in case unless you want to put it directly on top of CPU. I have my mounted to blow directly on the side of the chip. Keeps it cool enough to touch and remove right after turning off the PC (I always have it on 24/7. Sorry I lost P/N. easy to find about 2 1/2 in round w/ square end.

K6-2 300 overclocked to 375 with only a normal heatsink/fan here (Overclocked System/PCI Bus and graphics card too btw and no crash problems with SMAC or any other game whatsoever.

Just FYI...
The 233 is known to have heat problems. The 266 and up was given a smaller wafer (easier to cool, and overclock). I had nothing but problems with overclocking, and until I cooled the case down my 233 ran like crap.
